The Yosemite Possession

Our story this week comes from Tony Stangert from California. I first received what I thought was a good story from Tony, but I thought it was missing some elements. After a few emails I got the rest of it and what started out as a good story is now epic. I won’t try to sway you. I will let the story do that. Here is Tony’s story!

In 2001 I was visiting a girlfriend in Monterey Bay. Karen and I decided to visit an art museum where they were presenting the works of the famous photographer Ansel Adams. The photos were from his historic venture into Yosemite National Park. His art simply took our breath away, especially when you consider the pictures were taken in 1927. At that time I was a free spirit and I convinced Karen that we should just go there and see for ourselves.

Yosemite was about 160 miles away and we arrived at the park at dusk. There was not much available for lodging but we did find a crappy motel about twenty minutes outside the park. The area had a few businesses, motels, a couple restaurants, a liquor store, and a gas station. All the buildings were separate and free-standing. However, I could not see a single residence. It was very odd for me having been raised in the city.

The motel was a drive-up to the door type and very outdated. Two things stood out in my memory. The floor model TV was still in black-and-white and the strange bathroom had cedar outdoor siding surrounding the tub. There was one other thing, and that was just how creepy the whole place was. At first, the novelty of it was fun, but then at two in the morning we were fleeing the room. We had finished setting up for the night and decided to head out for dinner and drinks. It was a small town, with no more than 50 people, but there were places open. We ate dinner, and had some fun, but wanted to be ready for a full day of exploring the park. So, we headed back to the motel early.

Back at the motel, we both had issues falling asleep even though we were exhausted from the trip. I turned on the old black-and-white TV to find a classic episode of Kojak playing. Finally, at around eleven we dozed off. At precisely two in the morning, the both of us woke up, sat up in bed in terror, and pain. Neither one of us was clear on what had just occurred, but we knew we had to leave and leave now. We grabbed our stuff, shot out of the room, and headed to the car. The motel office was closed so I threw the keys at the front door as we left.

About half an hour later we were parked at the Yosemite sign in a little pull-off. We both described the same experience. A very angry short man with long gray hair and an even longer beard was yelling about some woman. He was dressed in dungy overalls and had no shoes. He somehow subdued us and had put his hand into the center of our backs while we slept. This felt like a possession. It was so painful we both could still feel it even after we had left the motel. Karen was not in my dream and I wasn’t in hers. The physical pain lasted 10-15 minutes for both of us. To this day I am not sure what we experienced, but I do know I will never be back.

We slept in the car at that pull-off until the first bit of light woke us up. Sleep-deprived and bleary-eyed we made our way home. I remember driving past one of the cliffs we saw in the museum. Our perspective of it was much different than that of Ansel Adams. From our view, we were mostly just under it but we were satisfied and our goal was achieved.

At the first bit of civilization, we got a room at a real hotel. let’s say a Holiday Inn. We grabbed a six-pack, some fast food, and watched a color television. We went to sleep early that night, but sleep for us was messed up for a couple days. We got up early and drove to San Francisco for a full day of tourist stuff.

RAS #530 – The Happy Prince

On Ron’s Amazing Stories it is all about the kids, sort of. Our featured story comes from the pen of Oscar Wilde who was not known for writing children’s stories. We have the classic short story The Happy Prince and I think it’s pretty good. Also, we have a story from Rodney about Green Eyes, and we present another Our Amazing Stories about the Oxford English Dictionary. If you think that sounds a bit boring I assure you it’s not. A real Scrabble player’s dream, but I tell you you’re going to love it.

Featured Story – The Happy Prince

Our featured story is a classic from the novel The Happy Prince And Other Tales by Oscar Wilde. The first printing of this book was in May 1888. In a town full of suffering poor people, a swallow who was left behind after his flock flew off to Egypt for the winter meets the statue of the late Happy Prince. Our story is The Happy Prince and is a classic reading done by the great David Sweeney-Bear.

Other Stories Include – The Sapphire Theft, Fractured Spirits, Two Big Green Eyes, The Happy Prince, and Our Amazing Stories: The Oxford English Dictionary.

Program Note: If you want to visit The Oxford English Dictionary follow the link.

That’s The Old Man

Our story comes from Melody Hanks from Brighton, Texas. This is Melody’s second story sent to the podcast. To remind you Melody is a Psychic and says she has a lot of stories to share. If you have a story that you would like to share on the blog or the podcast let me know. You can head to the main website and use the story submission banner.  Here is Melody’s Story:

Hello Ron, I still love your show and still never miss an episode. This story is quite recent. My grandfather passed away and told me that he would come to see me so I could know that everything was okay.

Two days after he died, the neighborhood security guard knocked on our door on a Sunday morning. He told us: “An old man came to your house earlier, knocked on your door for half an hour, and finally left. When I asked him what he wanted, he told me he needed to say goodbye to someone and that he was okay”

We were all stunned, had no idea who this old man was, or who he was looking for. The guard stopped talking and pointed to a picture of my grandfather hanging on the wall, “That’s the old man!”

My entire family froze for a minute. I’m not 100% sure if the guard was telling the truth, but why would he lie for no reason? So, I like the idea that my grandad wanted to say goodbye and keep his promise.

Another great story Melody thank you for sharing it! Oh, and I don’t see any reason to not believe it.

RAS #529 – Pollack And The Porroh Man

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we really don’t have any kind of theme this time. We will review a fantasy novel on Audible, and on These Are Your Stories we have orbs and then head to Mumbai, India. Our featured story is a pretty good one from the OTR series Escape. It is a bit on the creepy side but tells the story of Pollack and his encounters with the Porroh Man. So why not press that play button and enjoy the ride.

Featured Story – Pollock And The Porroh Man

Our featured story was originally written by H.G. Wells. It appeared in his short story collection The Plattner Story And Others published in April of 1896. It takes place in a swampy village on the lagoon river near the Turner Peninsula in Southern Sierra Leone. This is when Pollock had his first encounter with the Porroh Man. It would not be his last. The story is titled Pollock and the Porroh Man and what we will hear is an adaptation of the story from the classic OTR series Escape. It first aired on October 29, 1947.

Other Stories Include – Man In The Back Seat, Black Sand Baron, The Water Orb, Scary Figure At Night, Navy Ghost Man, and Pollock And The Porroh Man

Program Links: Debra Gnockland asked about how to find information about property use. Here is the link I spoke about to Historical Aerials

The Ghost of Beardsley Road

Emails are great and I love to get them from you guys. I received this one from Mitchel Ritchie who lives in Selma, California.

Ron, if you haven’t heard the song “The Ghost of Beardsley Road “ here is a link for you and a couple personal stories to go with it.

In my early twenties, I was living in my mother’s rental house. My father passed away in an auto accident when I was around ten. In the 70s I was burning the candle at both ends already having an amazing career rewinding electric motors and generators all over the Western United States. We worked crazy long hours in the noisiest and dirtiest conditions. I was the lead man and that meant I got to do all the out-of-state jobs mostly in cement ball mills.

The Ghost Of Beardsley Road

Editor’s note: I had to look up what a Cement Mill was:  It is the equipment used to grind the hard, nodular clinker from the cement kiln into the fine gray powder that is cement. Most cement is currently ground in ball mills.

Anyway, I was home very little and when I did I would try to catch up with my friends. My girlfriend and I were not getting along so I was home alone sleeping on the couch with my head facing the hallway to my bedroom. I awoke in the middle of the night and saw a faint white figure down at the end of the hall. I was still half asleep and closed my eyes. When I reopened them the figure was halfway down the hall coming towards me now brighter and flowing.  I jumped up!

Now, I am six foot four and I am standing toe to toe with a pure white angel! The room was lit up. I can only describe her as the “good witch” in The Wizard Of Oz (Only taller and more beautiful). Confused, I ran right through her down the hall to my bedroom and didn’t sleep anymore that night. I can tell you at the time I was making some marginal choices in life and that night I slowly got on track !!

I’m now 29 (1990) and I’m Vice President of sales. I met my girlfriend who was a farmer. Her father had just passed away two years earlier and she lived with her mom to run the farm. After three months we knew that we had a special relationship and within 6 months we were engaged. We had a long-distance relationship so I would occasionally stay with them on the weekend.

One night I woke up in the spare room and rolled my feet off the bed to get up. There was a pair of men’s brown shoes there. It was like I was supposed to step into them. I didn’t remember seeing them there when I went to bed. I went into the kitchen and asked my fiancée and her mother about the shoes.  She ran in, checked, and said that it was her father’s and didn’t know how they got in the room.

We’ve been married 30 years now and raised two beautiful daughters in the same house. My wife and I can honestly say over the years we’ve had some strange stuff happen. The alarm goes off for no reason, certain lights go on and stay on, the grinder starts up for no reason as well as the TV. Also, The bedroom lamp would go on, wake me up, and then go off. We were always on our toes and took them as either something was going to happen and heeded them as a warning and sometimes that we were just doing a good job.

One more little crazy thing that we all remember. We have a second home in Morro Bay Ca. One night we went to a smaller town for dinner. I got up to wash my hands and when I came back my wife’s and mother-in-law’s eyes were big as saucers! In the small restaurant, a lady came up to my wife from out of nowhere and stared at my two-year-old daughter. My wife asked, “Can I help you?”

She said, “Your girl is an Angel!”

Proud, my wife said, “Thank you.”

The lady said, ”No you don’t understand she is a real angel!”
