RAS #312 – Old Time UFOs

This time on Ron’s Amazing Stories we look at what the world thought about UFOs during the golden age of radio. We do this through the voice of Edward R. Murrow. Also, Tom Williams is back and he tells us a story that ties in quite well. We end the podcast with a tale that comes to us from an anonymous source. It could be the most amazing story we have ever had on the show.

RAS #311 – The Lanceford House

On Ron’s Amazing Stories, we have a story rich environment. Jim Sweeney shares a set of scary tales from Vermont. Also, we present a classic horror tale from the South African radio series Beyond Midnight. Add to that, a history lesson from the Smithsonian about a stump, and a moment in time from February of 1880.

Our OTR Story – The Lanceford House

Our story comes from the South African Radio series Beyond Midnight. It was a horror anthology series that ran from 1968 to 1970 on Springbok Radio. The story uses minimal music and sound effects, but the actor does such an incredible job that somehow you don’t even realize it. It is called, The Lanceford House and first aired, in Africa, on January 24, 1969.

RAS #310 – Too Many Crooks

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we debut a brand new OTR series from the Towers Of London called: The Lives of Harry Lime. You might recognize the name from the classic Orson Welles movie, The Third Man. Also on the show, we have a Sherlock Holmes short story and a mysterious moment in time.

Our OTR Story – Too Many Crooks

Our OTR story today is as a suggestion from listener David Larsen. He writes:

Hey Ron, I remember another radio serial, based on the movie, The Third Man.  It is called The Lives of Harry Lime. It is a crime show from the point of view of the criminal and is played by Orson Welles as Harry.  It is an episodic serial that doesn’t have an overarching storyline. It was one of the first OTR shows that I ever listened to and is one of my favorites. If you ever want to watch the original movie it can be found on Amazon Prime. As a side note, the movie and the character are much darker than the radio version – David.

It turns out that Orson Welles does reprise his role of Harry Lime from the celebrated 1949 film. However, in the film, Lime dies and thus the third man. Well, how to continue the series?  The radio series is a “prequel” to the film and depicts the many misadventures of the con-artist. I picked the very first program on the list to play and I have to say I love the writing on this one. It is titled, Too Many Crooks and first aired on August 3, 1951.

RAS #308 – The Trojan War

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this week we have tales ranging from a somber Gunsmoke to a listener’s tale about a rogue baby monitor. We throw in a controversial short story and a poem for Christmas. All of which should make you say, cool!

OTR Story – The Trojan War

Our OTR story comes from the early years of the classic western series, Gunsmoke. During the first years of the show, the stories told were more solemn. The writers wanted to present what it was really like in those dark western towns. The west was largely lawless and towns truly did have to protect themselves from many threats. Our story gives a view into this as we follow a gang that comes to Dodge City to start a crime spree. The tale is whimsically called, The Trojan and first aired on CBS radio February 28, 1953.
