The Train Whistle

I am pretty sure that I have mentioned that I love a good train ride. This story comes from Jessica McCormack who lives in Edgartown, Massachusetts. Her train ride was the stuff of nightmares and might not be as fun as traveling across the country on Amtrak. Jessica has titled her story, The Train Whistle

Hello Ron. If I remember right you love strange stories and I have one for you. This took place when I was a Junior or Sophomore in high-school. Growing up I lived in a small farm town that has been around since the early 1800s. There are tons of grave sites and corn fields.

The Train Whistle

One summer evening my friend and I were riding our bikes down a trail and stumbled upon a gated graveyard that was surrounded by  forest. There were no houses or train tracks for quite a few miles. We went into it to see if we knew any names. The oldest grave dated back to the late 1700s and the youngest was 1920. The names on the grave sites were all similar so we assumed it was a private family cemetery.

As we continued to explore I felt very uneasy as if I was disturbing the peace of the area. Next thing you know we hear three distinct whistle blows. Like from a child’s train whistle that you would buy at a native American trading post, or a nick-nack store in a touristy area. The whistle was coming from the forest and kept getting closer to us, always coming in 3s. “Choo choo choo” After hearing the sound approaching we hightailed it out of there.

We hopped back on bikes and started back down the trail. The whistle kept following us and the further we got away the more intense it became. By that I mean it was sounding more and more like a real train. We finally broke out off the trail and the sounds just stopped.

I have no idea what was making those sounds. We were not near a train track or play ground for that matter. The only explanation I have is that someone was waiting in the forest for another person to come by to scare them or it was some ghost child messing around. I will leave that up to you. – Jessica McCormack

Well Jessica, that is a pretty freaky story! I have a feeling that it wasn’t anyone waiting around for a joke. But I have no idea what it was. I do know that train sounds and whistles are a good source of some great paranormal stories. Thank you for your tale.

RAS #559 – Come Into My Parlor

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we have so much good stuff that I am not even sure it is legal (speaking metaphorically of course). What we have is legal and pretty good. We have three ghost stories from you guys, two classic science fiction stories, and a brand new Our Amazing Stories that looks at some astonishing women! So let’s get to this stuff by pressing that play button.

Featured Story – Come Into My Parlor

Come Into My Parlor

Our featured story this week is a strange tale that first appeared in Science Fiction Adventures Magazine in February of 1953. What we see is not always what there is to see. Sober or drunk, Johnny was seeing things. Like spider webs in the night sky. But as a newspaper reporter, Bennet had the job of keeping facts and fancies separate. He was good at that—too good! The story is titled Come Into My Parlor and was written by Charles E. Fritch. It is read for us by the Librivox veteran Dale Grothmann.

Other Stories Include – Clue In The Hand, Fairy Tale by Stephen King, Midnight Shuffles, More From Nana, Haunted BK, Come Into My Parlor, Our Amazing Stories – Amazing Women, and Survivors

Ron’s Amazing Stories Is Sponsored by: Audible – You can get a free audiobook and a 30 day free trial at audibletrial.com/ronsamazingstories  and Gladdy’s Goodies – Good Treats for your dog to eat.

RAS #558 – Nightfall And Other Stories

On Ron’s Amazing Stories it is all about Nightfall. I am talking about the classic SciFi story written by Isaac Asimov. We will hear the origins of the story, some thoughts about it, and the radio adaptation of it from the OTR series X-Minus One. We also have two new ghost stories from the listeners. A pool boy ghost leaves his hand prints behind and a headless woman roams Iroquois Park in Louisville, Kentucky. So press that play button and enjoy the show.

Featured Story – Nightfall

Isaac Azimov

Our featured story comes from our featured audiobook. It is the radio adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Nightfall. It comes from the OTR series X-Minus One and truly does fire on all cylinders. But why? The answer is simple. The tale takes place on a planet where conditions are very different from those here on earth. In this one we are forced to imagine what life would be like with no night. Now on Earth there are no places like that. However, if you’re at the North or South Pole you can sort of experience it. But can you imagine a world that had no night at all? Then imagine the chaos that would ensue if suddenly the lights went out and you saw the stars for the very first time. That is what happens in Nightfall. It first aired on X-Minus One in December of 1955.

Other Stories Include – The Broken Window, Nightfall and Other Stories, Ghost In The Pool, The Night at Iroquois Park, and Nightfall by Isacc Azimov

Scourge Of The Mice Devils.

Our story for this week comes from Micheal Radcliff who lives in Minnesota. It is a tale that should send fear surging through your body and is the stuff of nightmares. Micheal has titled it Scourge Of The Mice Devils.

Hello Ron, I just found your podcast and love it. I am just starting to work through your library and I am having a good time. I have a story for you that is not paranormal, but somehow I know you are going to like it.  Thank you for doing what you do. – Mike

Scourge Of The Mice Devils

So, there I was perhaps five or six years old. My dad finally took me and two of my older siblings to Basswood Lake. I was so excited to go.

We set up a big, canvas tent, which was common in those days. I can still smell that canvas even now. I don’t know if it ever truly dried out. It always felt kind of damp and had that smell like mold and mildew. I kinda miss it, like I miss the smell of a two-stroke motor in the water. After a day of fun it was time to go to bed. We all walked into the tent and lined up, side-by-side, in sleeping bags on top of matts. But sweet dreams didn’t await us that night.

In the middle of the night, there was a lot of commotion. I woke up to mice scurrying all over us. They had chewed their way into the tent, and there seemed to be hundreds of them. The mice were in our bags and crawling on us. There were flashlights zipping around the tent, shining briefly on various culprits.

Oh and there was action outside too. We could see and hear them running across the top of the tent. An ocassical owl swept down and grabbed one in the moonlight right off the tent topper. My dad had work gloves on and he was trying to corral them while my brother grabbed them and stuffed them back into the holes. I had nightmares about this for a very long time.

The next morning the nightmares continued. The carnage from the mouse attack had raked havoc on our food supply and cooking utensils. Somehow everything was soaked with water and it had not rained. Dead mice were everywhere and in the pots and pans were drowned mice. With no food left and spirits broken we cleaned-up and packed-up ending our weekend trip early

I’m 53 years old now and have been back 47 years in a row to Basswood Lake. The events of that night have never been repeated. I have no explanation for what happened and have not heard of anyone else that has experienced the scourge of mice devils. I have had to move my camp because of bears, but never again because of mice. – Micheal Radcliff

Mike, that is so wrong in so many ways. I have never been afraid of the lowly mouse and this story changes all of that. To think that they swarm is the stuff of bad dreams and long nights. Thank you for that! I do however appreciate you sharing your story.
