It Howled Like A Dingo

The theme for Ron’s Amazing Stories this Thursday is dogs, wolves, and werewolves. Our featured story comes from Challenge Of The Yukon starring that amazing husky, King! We have a listener story from New Mexico where Jeremy encounters what can only be called a Skinwalker, and even our audiobook review is titled Lycanthropy And Other Chronic Illnesses. So I thought I would dig into the archives and share this story from Lydia Hansen all the way from Sydney Australia.  Lydia writes:

Hello Ron. Greetings from Sydney. I love your show and tell everyone about it. You are fantastic to listen to and I never miss it. I don’t have a whopper of a story for you, but it did happen.

Australian Dingo

I was twelve years old. My dad is a rancher and we lived out on Anna Creek most of my life. One morning, my dad asked me to get up early to take up sentry duties from my brother. We were having troubles with a pack of dingos in the region. They were stealing chicks and other small animals from locals. I relieved my brother and took up the watch. I had a pistol so that I could scare them off and alert my dad. It was still night. I saw a dark humanoid shape coming towards me. I thought it was my dad so I called out to it. The thing stopped and seemed to be looking in my direction, but I couldn’t see any features let alone eyes. I shined a flashlight at it. It disappeared from view as soon as the light hit it, but when I moved the beam away it would return to view. This went on for a few minutes or so, and then it howled like a dingo. I fired my pistol in the air and it vanished. A few minutes later my dad arrived and I told him what I saw. He said that he had seen the very same thing earlier that night. We never found it or saw it again. – Lydia Hansen, Sydney Australia

Amazing Story Lydia and thank you for sharing it with us. I did a little research and I didn’t have any reference to anything like it. How very strange and scary. I did learn that Aboriginal people have maintained and developed a rich folklore centered on spirits and ghosts. Perhaps those archives may help you learn more. I could not gain access to them. Again thank you for your story.

They’ll Send You Home and I Will Bury You!

There have been a few stories on the show over the years that have shook me to the core. Life is what we decide to make it. We can choose to say, “Woe is me!”, or we can decide to live each day to see what happens. Lately, I have been doing the whole “woe” thing. Then I came across this story sent in years ago by Ray Peyton from Lafayette, Louisiana. It woke me up a bit and today I am going to try the other side. Thank you Ray!

Ron

Ray Peyton

I just have to share this story. In 2008 I was home from Iraq on emergency Leave. My father had just been diagnosed with lung cancer. I only had ten days with him. On the last day, when I was scheduled to depart Lafayette, and head back overseas – I didn’t want to go. I figured it may be the last time I ever saw Dad alive. So I was at his house, waiting on my ride to the airport, talking to my father, trying to make up any excuse to stay, and finally he said, “You have to go”.

So I asked him, “Well Dad, what if I’m over there and you die?” He just looked at me and said nothing. So then I asked, “Well, what if I’m over there and I get killed?”

Without any hesitation on his part whatsoever, sternly, and forcibly he replied, “They’ll send you home and I will bury you!”

I will never forget that. Now that is being Frank! That is Life.

I got in the car waiting outside and left.

Afghanistan Patrol

We have talked about this before, but it bears repeating.  I love stories! That is why I do this blog, the podcast, and I hope it’s why you listen. It is my goal to bring you the best of the best and I try to do it each week.  One of the questions I get asked a lot is, how can I get my story on the program? The answer is simple. Just tell it! You can write it down and send it to me or we can chat and I’ll write it for you.  However it works, please send me your story like Master Sergeant Raymond Lieberman did. Here is his story that he sent in using the link at the bottom of this page.

I heard the story by “Frank” you had in episode #191. The one with the shadow.  I thought that I would share one of my experiences from Afghanistan.

We had just come in from patrol and were debriefing when the first blast shook the area. It was way off target and only managed to mangle a wrecked car a few blocks away.  There was also some small arms fire and an occasional sniper round.  All badly aimed or off target.  This was quite common and always meant that an inexperienced group had been sent out to harass and confuse us.

It didn’t take us long to figure out where they were, but who, that was another question. My group was assigned and we were chopper-ed to point well above the attackers to recon. They had set themselves up on a rock outcropping with no rear guard at all. They never saw us coming and to be honest we weren’t all that quiet about it. We had them in our sights and could have easily stopped the threat right then and there.  The problem?  They were all kids.  I am guessing between the ages 12 and 16.

They had mortars, machine guns and, much to our surprise, a single M110 SASS which is a US issued sniper rifle. We radioed back and were given the “go” to deal with the threat. But how to do that, not get shot and not hurt the kids. We grouped up and came up with a plan.

We knew that a direct assault was out. We could get hurt and the kids would be… well you get the idea.  We could drop smoke on them, but again with stray fire and them being on a cliff the odds someone gets hurt would be very high. What we decided to do was use The Voice of God!

With the help of being able to speak fluid Dari and a bull horn we simply yelled, “Hey you kids… this is god! Drop your weapons and prepare to meet your maker.”

This had the desired effect and of course the twin cobras swooping in sealed the deal.  They gave up without a fight. – Master Sergeant Raymond Lieberman

I love a story with a happy ending. Master Sergeant Lieberman went on to say that kids were taken away for punishment by the local militia. They would be returned to their families after serving some type of sentence. Where they got the guns, bombs and sniper weapon was never found out.

Shadows Everywhere

Our story this week comes from Jeannie Grant who lives in Bradford, Texas. Carl Jung once said, “We never see others. Instead we only see shadows of ourselves. The same way old painters would sit in a tiny dark room and trace the image of what stood outside a tiny window, in the bright sunlight. Not the exact image… everything is reversed or upside down.” This is another shadow story, and Jeannie has titled it Shadows Everywhere.

Hello Ron. I have heard you talking about shadow creatures. I’ve had multiple paranormal experiences but these types creep me out the most. I believe that I have a shadow person following me throughout my life.

Shadows Everywhere

The first time I remember seeing it myself was when I was in my old bedroom upstairs (meaning not in the basement). I was around 7-8 years old and in the middle of the night I woke up and looked at my window which had blinds and was illuminated by the moon. In front of the window however was a black silhouette of a little girl with what looked like short curly hair, old “timey” looking. I was terrified and thought I was seeing things so I just rolled over and tried to go back to sleep. The bedroom door was open when I woke up. I asked my parents if they came into my room and they said they didn’t.

A couple months or so after I had seen it, I had a sleepover with my friend at the time (still in the same room). We had slept on the floor because my bed was too small for the both of us. In the middle of the night, my friend woke up and saw that there was a dark shadow man standing over me and just staring down at me sleeping. She told me this when we woke up in the morning and I noticed again my door had been opened. I just figured it was one of my parents checking on us, so I asked them if they came into the room and they both said no.

Another night years later. My parents were on vacation and everyone went somewhere, but I opted to stay home. The first night out I was making dinner when I saw a flash of darkness move across the room. It stops right in front of me and I feel chills go through my body. I don’t remember what happened to the creature. Which is a whole new level of scary.

Years later I moved into my sister’s room (downstairs in the basement) after she moved out. I was 16-17 and had forgotten about the shadow person at this point. My best friend spent the night and she told me in the morning that she saw a shadow figure standing in the corner of the room in the middle of the night. I should point out that I had not told either of my friends about the shadow stories until after they told me that they saw it. I’m 19 now and still have periodic encounters with these creatures. The latest while I was at a movie theater but that is a story for another time. – Jeannie Grant

The Laundry Monster

Our story comes from my backyard Portland, Oregon. One thing there is in Portland is an abundance of Yoga Studios. I am not sure if that is unique to Portland or if that is true around the globe. But it seems like there is one on every corner, along with a coffee shop. We sure do love our coffee here in the Northwest. The tale comes from Brian Stone and he lives in SE Portland. Brian has titled it The Laundry Monster. – Ron

For context, I was 16 at the time and working my first job. I was in charge of doing the laundry and filing papers for a yoga studio. I should note that the laundry room was in the basement and that I was completely by myself when this happened. It was a typical Sunday, a class had just finished, and I was washing the towels. I had my headphones on and was putting the laundry into the washer when I had a feeling of being watched. I’d felt this many times in that basement when I was by myself, but it never felt malevolent though. I do know a few deaths happened in the building when it was in use as a textile factory. I ignored the feeling as I knew our resident ghost, who we affectionately called Charlie, was probably just watching me. Charlie was never violent in any way, he’d occasionally knock things down and make the room feel cold.

As I was putting away laundry when I felt pain below my chest. When I lifted my shirt up I saw three scratch marks and they burned. I remember being in complete shock, taking a picture of the scratches and sending it to my boss, parents and a few friends. They all believed I had simply scratched myself with the door of the washer but the washer door was closed when this happened. I did feel bad energy but I ignored it. After all, I had to do my job.

I went back to work when I heard a few footsteps from behind me. I turned, expecting to see Mara. She is one of the instructors and often came down to help out after closing. No one was there and those disembodied footsteps kept coming straight at me. Then came the growl. It was not like anything on this earth. The pure evil nature of it had me running out of the basement in pure terror. I came up into the main studio and Mara was there. We both went back downstairs but found nothing and all was quiet.

That was the only time while working at that place that I experienced anything like that and l have no explanation for it. – Brian Stone
