The Pegleg Ghost

Our story for this edition of These Are Your Stories comes from Orlando Florida. It first appeared in Episode #358 – The Mightiest Man. This is one of the more terrifying stories we have had over the years and It was submitted by Lizzie Martinez.

Hi Ron, My name is Lizzie. My husband has been an avid listener of your show for months and has been raving about it. So, I started listening to your podcast too. I am a little person. The only one in my family. Since I was about three or four years of age I have had the ability to see and speak to spirits. I am sensitive to their presence. Because of my experiences growing up I started investigating the paranormal and later started my own business. When I was a young girl my family lived in a small house. I had no room of my own so I had a bed in my parents’ bedroom. I saw some unexplainable things in that room at night. The first I remember is what I can only describe as the Grim Reaper.

This creature would stand near the end of my bed and just stare at me. It wore a felt-like cloak shrouding its face and arms. The thing would come nightly, but then it suddenly stopped. Something else began to come for me instead, and It was even more terrifying. It came to hurt and torment me and made sure that I couldn’t scream for help. Each time it came I would fight to free myself from its grasp. When I finally broke free I would jump into my parent’s bed and lie between them.

This new creature would watch me from the foot of the bed between the rails and glare. Looking back at it I believe it was still the Grim Reaper from before. It had transformed itself into a blonde-haired, blue-eyed little boy who had a peg leg. Yes, you read that right a peg leg. Just like a pirate.

Close your eyes and imagine a small child hearing footsteps approaching from the kitchen. With each small step, there was a loud clop that dragged upon the ceramic floor. Your heart races faster and you begin to feel almost out of breath. You hear that thing-child step down from the kitchen into the room and peek from behind the dresser that blocked the doorway’s view. That blonde-haired boy with blue eyes slowly walked around the side of the dresser and then just stood there with a smile on his face. That smile changes to a frightening and menacing smear. You want to run but there’s nowhere to go. His demeanor changes yet again. That look and that grin make you realize that something bad was going to happen. Your voice disappears. You can’t even scream to wake your parents to protect you. Then that blue-eyed boy charges at you. He removes that horrible peg leg and hits you over and over again.

I would get free. I could hear him, behind me, chasing me as I climbed in between my parents. There he would stop, stand at the end of the bed, and look through the railings swaying back and forth. We would lock eyes for what seemed like an eternity. Eventually, I would wake up and it would be morning. As each new day came I’d forget about the night. But when it was time to go to bed I’d remember why I was afraid to go to sleep. I would fight with my mom to stay up. She would think that I was just being a difficult child and send me anyway. I couldn’t find the words to explain to her what was going on.

We did eventually move up the street from that crazy little house and you would think that would have solved my ghost problems. Well, not so much, but that is another story for a different day.

Lizzie Martinez – Orlando Florida

I really don’t know what to say about this one. We have had a number of stories like this, but none has affected me quite like this. When I read it, somehow, it feels like it was happening to me. I don’t know how else to explain it. So very terrifying and it rings true. Lizzie thank you for sharing this story, it truly is amazing.

Forest Adventure

Our story comes from Aaron in Carson City, Nevada. Aaron wants us to know that he has a twin sister who dreamed the same events you are about to read. Also, with Aaron’s permission I have written his adventure, and here is what he told me:

I am a forest ranger who lives in a fire watchtower in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is a lonely job with a lot of downtime to think. Most believe all this is just a figment of my imagination, but I am here to tell you it happened.

I was up late keeping watch.  There had been a large number of lightning strikes over the past few days and any one of these could lead to disaster.  Not only for the forest but those that live and work in the park.  I observed a streak of lightning heading towards the tower. However, it was ground-based and had no connection to the sky.  Also, when it struck the ground there was no sound at all.  It was quite near the base of the tower and it continued to glow. I was concerned about my safety so I radioed my commander and told her that I was leaving the base to check it out. I hopped into my jeep and drove to the site.

I had to hike about a half-a-mile and during the walk, I could not get over the feeling that I was being watched. I used my service band radio a couple of times just to hear another human voice. My commander kept telling me that it was all in my head. That was the last thing I heard from the radio because as I arrived, it crackled and was completely drained of all battery life.

I was at the outside of a small meadow up against a mound of piled trees. The paddock was obviously man-made and I guessed that a small fire had been fought here in the past. Then I saw the glow, it appeared on the side opposite me. It was a humanoid shape about the size of a large black bear on its hind legs. It wavered in and out. At times it would disappear completely. To say that I was scared is an understatement. I wanted to run, but I could not. I felt as if I had lost my mind, but I was compelled to step out from my hiding place.

I said, “Hello?”

An eerie tone filled the meadow.  It was a low pitch hum and it wavered back and forth in a formalized rhythm.  After a few seconds, it stopped. I felt a chill go through my body and I watched in horror and the figure started to move towards me. I could not move.  As it got closer I could see that it was humanoid, but had long arms and very short legs. Its hands could only be described as claws. It got to within two feet of me and I could see its eyes. They were blood red and I felt like it could see through my very soul.

That was the last thing I remember. I woke up in my jeep, my assigned call letters pouring from the service radio and frantically asking me to respond. It showed full battery again. A minute later a chopper was overhead. Its searchlights bathed my jeep with intense white light. Although groggy I was able to activate the mic and respond. I was told later that it had been one hour, fifteen minutes, and forty-five seconds since my last call.

Aaron – Carson City, Nevada

What can I say about this? I talked with Aaron personally and I believe that something happened to him. What? I guess that is left up to you and your imagination. I do want to thank Aaron and his sister for chatting with me. Aaron is his real first name but asked that I not use his surname for the story.

Sister Martha’s Lesson

Our story for this edition of TAYS has to be one of the most amazing I have heard about guardian angels to date. It originally played on episode #357 – Of Angels And Ghosts.  I have told you before that I have quite a collection of these types of stories and in fact, I plan to have a full chapter dedicated to them in my upcoming book. This one comes from Agnes Oliver who resides in Manchester, England. Agne’s original email went something like this:

Sister Martha's Lesson

Hello Ron, greetings from England. I heard your request for stories and I’ve experienced quite a few. Manchester is a very old city and is full of its ghost lore. I’ve never been one who traipses about looking for ghosts, but they always seem to find me. Some might not call this a ghost story but I tend to lump all spirituality together. The spirit world is what it is and when the veil is thin it tends to spill over. This story occurred when I was around the age of 12. We were living in the northern part of Manchester at that time in a house that was nearly 200 years old. The house was actually a sub-let of the church in the area. Originally they used it for aspiring nuns. It was a place for them to decide if the nuns’ life was the life for them. I always felt at home in this place, warm, safe, and secure.

One evening my girlfriend Gretchen came over with her brand new Ouija board. She wanted to show me how it worked and so we decided to make the evening of it. We set it up in the basement thinking that this would be the one place that had ghosts if the house had ghosts. Try as we might we could not get any response from the board, absolute silence. We both thought that it was a total sham and that anyone who said different was probably just making it up.

We were about to give up when all of a sudden things started falling off the walls and shelves by themselves. Cans, lampshades, pictures, even bags of nails split out onto the floor. It was total chaos. We were amazed by what we saw, but not at all frightened. That peace and protection I spoke about earlier prevailed.

Everything went quiet and we both felt a shiver go through our bodies at the same moment. Then we both heard a woman’s voice. It was disembodied and seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere. It simply said, “I’ve protected you this round, but don’t play with what you don’t understand.”

Quickly we packed up the Ouija Board and placed it in the nearby furnace. As it burned we both heard a sickly scream that died away as quickly as it came. We never told anyone of that experience, but a few weeks later I was attending mass at our local church. Sister Martha, one of my teachers, called me over after the service. She said, “I hope you learned a valuable lesson dear.”

I told her I didn’t know what she was talking about, but then I realized that the voice I heard in our basement was that of Sister Martha. She just smiled and I could tell she knew the whole story.

I never played with an Ouija Board again, but it was not the last time I would need the protection of Sister Martha. I would hear that voice again and again in life and I still hear her today 30 years later. Sister Martha passed away peacefully in 2007.

Agnes Oliver – Manchester, England

I had chills when I read this story for the first time and it still gives me chills today. I want to thank Agnes for sharing her story with us. Agnes has had several stories on the podcast over the years and she has said that she has many more them she wants to tell us. I for one can’t wait.

No More Hitchhikers!

We continue the Month Of Spooky 2021 with a scary one that Kristopher Evans from Newport emailed in. I don’t know for sure which Newport Kristopher is from, because there are so many! But, if I had to guess I would go with New York. Kristopher has titled this No More Hitchhikers.

Hey Ron, thank you for the opportunity to share my strange story. I am a long-distance trucker, and I have been doing this for about 15 years now. I drive the really big rigs. Because of the size of the trucks most of my work is done at night. I used to pick up hitchhikers to help pass the time on the lonely roads. Now I listen to podcasts like yours to do the same thing. Why? No more hitchhikers, and here is my story.

I was taking a load from New York to Santa Fe. This was a long trip even for me. I was on a lonely stretch of road somewhere in Oklahoma on Highway 44, when I spotted a hitchhiker. He wasn’t asking for a ride. He was just walking along the side of the road and I was pretty bored so I decided to pick the guy up. I pulled over and waited for him. He came all along the side and looked up at me. I rolled down the window and asked him if he needed a ride. He gladly accepted, ran around the front of the truck, and hopped in. The first thing I noticed about him was how clean he was. That is quite rare for hitchers this far from nowhere.

We had gone about 15 miles and I was regretting having him along because he was silent as a church mouse. Absolutely nothing came out of him and he didn’t answer any of the questions I asked. I was about to tell him this is as far as I go when he spoke up, “Where are you going, anyway?”

I decided not to tell him that I was on my way to Santa Fe, so I told him that I would be going as far as Elk City, Oklahoma. I remembered seeing that city on a road sign a few miles back. He replied, “Oh, I better get started then, that’s just a few miles away.”

At that moment a chill went through my body like I’ve never felt before. I literally felt like I was in danger and needed to do something fast so I said, “What do you need to do?”

“Just you never mind, keep driving, and you’ll find out!“ His voice had changed and it sounded evil.

“I’ll have no funny business”, I said, “This is not my first rodeo and you don’t want to deal with me!”

He became quiet again but I could hear him moving around nervously in his seat. It was then I heard the crack. I don’t know how else to describe it. It was not like a weapon click or anything like that. It was like bone breaking. I looked over at the man to see what the noise was and what I saw terrified me. his physical form was changing. I slammed on the brakes, managed to get it over to the side of the road, opened the door, and ran. All the while I felt like I was being chased.. until I didn’t. I was about 50 feet away from the truck when I glanced back and there was no one there. feeling stupid, I walked back and looked in the cab. The man was gone.

I wish that there was more to this story. I looked around for a bit and couldn’t find him. I looked in the truck and nothing was missing or out of place. I thoroughly searched the sleeper and found nothing out of the ordinary there either. I started up the truck and drove to the nearest bar I could find. To this day I no longer pick-up hitchhikers.

Kristopher Evans, Newport, NY (I think)

What a crazy story Kristopher. Something right out of a Twilight Zone episode. I actually thought you reacted better than I would have, but it is my guess as a long distance trucker you have seen some pretty strange stuff. Thank you for sharing it!

The Man From Planet X

The Month Of Spooky 2021 continues this week with the annual retelling of one of my favorite old time radio classics, The Thing On The Fourble Board. This time we shake it up a bit with commentary by Sylvia and Myself. You will hear some insights about the story that should be enjoyable or at least unusual.

On the blog this time we have a story from our old friend Tom Williams. If you will remember he was raised in the south, but now lives in Berlin, Germany. Tom sent this one some time ago and has become one of my favorites.

Hello again Ron,  I am not sure if you would like a little humor to your show, but give this a try, it is about aliens you know!!!  Here is my scary (Funny) story. . . . .Tom

I was 8 years old in 1951, and I went to see the movie, The Man from Planet X. This particular time I was alone. I stepped up to the Cashier and purchased my ticket ( a whopping 25 cents). Then went to the refreshment counter and popped for two bags of Popcorn (another whole 30 Cents), and finally proceeded down the aisle to find the best seat for viewing. As I walked down the aisle, I noticed that the movie had just started the credits. I sat in a seat near the center of the theater.

The lead Actor in the movie was just pushing his bicycle down a hill. The scene was a dark and foggy countryside and the background music was of the usual scary variety. He then saw a saucer shaped disk, shrouded in fog in the dale below. The actor walked around the saucer looking into the lighted porthole windows as he went along.  Suddenly, he looked into the face of the Alien! The background music was so startling that I actually threw both bags of popcorn into the air.

The next thing I remember I was standing outside the movie house wondering how I got there. I gathered my wits and was about to go back in to finish watching the Movie, but the manager refused to let me back in, even after I showed him my recently purchased ticket. I never got to see the movie I had paid for, and I only had enough money left for the Bus fare home.

Oh’ how I longed to see that movie. Finally, after 60 years, my Brother-in-law was able to send it to me. My taste has changed over the years and it was a disappointing movie, to say the least. The Film wasn’t scary and the copy I have has a different beginning for some strange reason. That goes to show you that memories are sometimes better than the actual event.

Keep up the Entertaining podcasts and all the best,

Tom from Berlin, Germany

Well thank you Tom for your story. I am quite familiar with your movie. I love to watch classic sci-fi films from the 50’s. My favorites being The War of The Worlds and When Worlds Collide. While they don’t terrify like they did way back when. To me they are very special. The Man From Planet X went into production on December 13, 1950, at Hal Roach Studios in Culver City, California, and wrapped principal photography six days later. In order to save money the film was shot on sets for the 1948 Ingrid Bergman film Joan of Arc. They used artificial fog to change moods, plot locations, and to hide the lack of backdrops. Not your high budget film. It was released again in 1953 which might explain why the opening of the film was different in your version. I am not sure about that though.
