Scourge Of The Mice Devils.

Our story for this week comes from Micheal Radcliff who lives in Minnesota. It is a tale that should send fear surging through your body and is the stuff of nightmares. Micheal has titled it Scourge Of The Mice Devils.

Hello Ron, I just found your podcast and love it. I am just starting to work through your library and I am having a good time. I have a story for you that is not paranormal, but somehow I know you are going to like it.  Thank you for doing what you do. – Mike

Scourge Of The Mice Devils

So, there I was perhaps five or six years old. My dad finally took me and two of my older siblings to Basswood Lake. I was so excited to go.

We set up a big, canvas tent, which was common in those days. I can still smell that canvas even now. I don’t know if it ever truly dried out. It always felt kind of damp and had that smell like mold and mildew. I kinda miss it, like I miss the smell of a two-stroke motor in the water. After a day of fun it was time to go to bed. We all walked into the tent and lined up, side-by-side, in sleeping bags on top of matts. But sweet dreams didn’t await us that night.

In the middle of the night, there was a lot of commotion. I woke up to mice scurrying all over us. They had chewed their way into the tent, and there seemed to be hundreds of them. The mice were in our bags and crawling on us. There were flashlights zipping around the tent, shining briefly on various culprits.

Oh and there was action outside too. We could see and hear them running across the top of the tent. An ocassical owl swept down and grabbed one in the moonlight right off the tent topper. My dad had work gloves on and he was trying to corral them while my brother grabbed them and stuffed them back into the holes. I had nightmares about this for a very long time.

The next morning the nightmares continued. The carnage from the mouse attack had raked havoc on our food supply and cooking utensils. Somehow everything was soaked with water and it had not rained. Dead mice were everywhere and in the pots and pans were drowned mice. With no food left and spirits broken we cleaned-up and packed-up ending our weekend trip early

I’m 53 years old now and have been back 47 years in a row to Basswood Lake. The events of that night have never been repeated. I have no explanation for what happened and have not heard of anyone else that has experienced the scourge of mice devils. I have had to move my camp because of bears, but never again because of mice. – Micheal Radcliff

Mike, that is so wrong in so many ways. I have never been afraid of the lowly mouse and this story changes all of that. To think that they swarm is the stuff of bad dreams and long nights. Thank you for that! I do however appreciate you sharing your story.

The Owl That Saved Me

Owls have long been the subject of myth and superstition. Are these mysterious, large-eyed, nocturnal creatures fearsome? Wise? Ghostly? I think probably all of the above. Owls are enigmatic. They are beautiful, mysterious, intriguing, fierce, spooky and thanks to Harry Potter Owls are more enchanting than ever before.

We have this short tale from Nia Maher who lives in Prescott, Arizona:

The Owl That Saved Me

I have always been fascinated with owls. They seem so wise and scary at the same time. I once had one save my life and I can’t explain it.

I was driving home from a gig on a dark autumn night. We had just played at a local bar and I was excited. I wasn’t watching the road and had an accident. When I woke up my car was wrapped around a tree and I was pinned down. Scared, I looked for my cell phone, but it was nowhere to be found. I looked out the smashed window and there was an owl. He looked right at me or rather through me. I can’t explain it, I just felt like everything was going to be okay. I passed out. I woke up next in the hospital. I had some broken bones and a concussion, but would fully recover.  I know this is not much of a story, and I don’t know why, but I thank that owl for being there. – Nia Maher

Well, I thank that owl as well. Owls are truly something odd and there is so much we can learn from them. Thank you for your story Nia.

The Ghost Bride of Haynesville Road

This story comes from the great state of Maine. One of the most haunted places in Maine is said to be a stretch of road called Route 2A. It is in the north part of the state and runs through the Haynesville Woods. It is well known for some tragic and bizarre accidents. One example is a woman who can be seen walking along the side of the road. Margi Wells, who lives near there, had this encounter with the ghost bride of Haynesville road. Here is her story:

The Ghost Bride Of Haynesville Road

I was driving home and had to go through Haynesville. I always feel strange driving that stretch of road, but nothing weird has ever happened. I of course knew of its history, but always thought it was a bunch of bunk. That is until that night.

It was dark and I saw a woman walking on the side of the road. She was dressed in white head to toe and saying that she looked out of place was an understatement. I slowed to a stop, rolled down the window, and asked if she needed any help. She told me that she was a new bride. She and her husband had been in a car accident, and they needed help. I told her that I would gladly assist and to get in. I unlocked the door and pushed it open. As she moved towards the car she just vanished. I felt a chill go through my body and that’s it. The end of the story. Nothing! I drove home and told my roommate about it, but he just laughed and said that he too had heard the stories. – Margi Wells – Bancroft, Maine

Well Margi, I have no explanation for it. A simple scary haunting of the Hanesville forest I guess. Thank you for sharing your amazing story.

Angel In New York

Our story comes from home. Literally and figuratively. It was written by Yvonne originally from Minnesota. Yvonne is not the name I associate with her. You see I have always called her Mom. My mom is 96 years-old. Here is her story about her dad and mom.

Grandpa Redal

The year was 1971. My dad was a retired pastor when this story occurred. Retired, is just a word as far as he was concerned. Instead of relaxing to a simple lifestyle he became the pastor for congregations who were either waiting to find a replacement or theirs were incapacitated in some way. In fact, he had recently returned from one in Arizona where he had served for six months. That’s hard work for a retired man.

He and my mom were planning to move to Hudson, New York. He would become the pastor of a congregation there for who knows how long. I was totally against it. He was quite ill, and walking was almost impossible. However, he insisted. The furniture they needed had already been sent! So, I took them to the train where they would move across the country from Washington State to New York. The picture of them leaving is a memory I will never forget! Mom was wrestling with two suitcases, and dad was carrying a small box. I always wondered what was in that box, probably only his cigars. He did like his cigars!

When they arrived in New York they knew they had to get to the airport to take a plane to Hudson. They thought that there would be a bus provided but the girl at the desk said it would be up to them. She pointed to a glass door where they could get a taxi. They headed out and saw hundreds of taxis and thousands of people all looking for a ride.

”How are we ever going to get one of those taxis?”, Mom said as she dragged the suitcases outside.

Dad still hung on to that little box. All of a sudden two young men came to where they were standing, “We will take care of you,” they said.

One of the men picked up the suitcases and the other man took dad’s arm. They brought them to a place where there was only one taxi waiting and it all was quiet. The man helped dad into the back seat and the other took care of the suitcases. Mom turned to thank those young men, but they were not to be found, anywhere! She looked up and down the street and saw nothing except taxis and people getting in them. Where were the young men?

My mom always said they were angels sent to aid them in a very tough time. They did arrive in Hudson and my dad took over the church. It would be his last, because he would pass away a few months later.  He is buried in Hudson NY and my mom returned to Washington State to live out the rest of her days.  – Yvonne Redal – Minnesota

I have heard this story many times. It always boggles my mind each time it gets told. I had the pleasure of hearing my grandmother tell it and to me it only reminds how simple life can be if we let it. After all, the birds of the fields get taken care of everyday. Who do you think does that?

The Tall Man From Roswell

Sometimes the best stories can be the short ones. This one comes from Benito Martez from the land of enchantment San Pablo, New Mexico. I urge you to take a moment and think about this and ask yourself, Okay then, where did he go?

Hello Ron, I live in a tiny little town where everyone knows everyone. We are also very close to the Mexican border which makes us a busy town. The other day I was downtown buying some grain and a man came up to me asking what was the best restaurant in town. I gladly helped him. I noticed that he was very tall, and very bald. That is something you don’t see around here. I asked him where he was from. He got very nervous and quickly said that he was from Roswell. Hmm, I thought and looked down at my watch. I turned back to him and he was gone. I do mean gone! I looked around the street. There were many short latinos, like me, everywhere, but no man from Roswell. A man that tall could not just disappear into the crowd. Could he? – Benito Martez

That is a strange story Benito and your right I tall man usually does stand out in a crowd. Unless you are at a basketball game.  Great story and thank you for sharing it!
