Gerry’s UFO

Gerry's UFO

This time we have a story from Gerry In New England.  That is all I know about him, but I do love his story. He sent this in via the website and it was on the show a few years ago. Over the years I have had a lot of fisherman stories sent in and every time they have been UFO tales. Connection? Who Can say.

– Ron

Here is Gerry’s Story:

Ron, I loved what you did during the month of October and I should have shared my story then, but I was afraid. My wife said even if they don’t believe you it still a good story, so for better or worse here it is:

I work as a fisherman off the coast of New England. My job is to gaff the fish as they come into the boat, kill it, and then put it into the icebox. A much easier job than say, running the net, but back breaking nonetheless. We fish in the early mornings, fill the boat, and head to the market to sell our catch.

There are long stretches where there is nothing to do. So we, the crew, would talk a lot and look out at the ocean. One morning before the sun was up I saw a light way off.  It bobbed up and down like a buoy would, but still looked strange. I pointed it out to my crewmates and they agreed that it didn’t look right. We forget about it and set about to get ready for the day. Margret (he’s a guy) broke the silence and shouted that light was closer. Sure enough that bobbing light was heading straight towards us at a high rate of speed. It had to be a boat.  It was an odd shaped flat triangle with lights at each corner. As it got closer we could see it was smooth on sides and completely flat on the bottom. As a boat it would be useless, but as a flying machine it seemed right at home.  It flew right over the top of the boat, slapping water in every which way.  We were soaked.  It didn’t stop, didn’t float and didn’t make a single engine sound. Of course with the wild crazy water spray any engine noise could have been drowned out.

It flew towards shore and we finally lost sight of it.  What was it? What happened? None of us ever found it because the captain ordered us not to report it.  Just as well who would believe us anyway?  Thanks for letting me share my tale. I hope you put it on the show.

– Gerry

RAS #480 – Night Screams

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this time we have a screaming shadow. Yep, you read that right, and it is terrifying. Also, we have a brand new Johnny Is It True and a tale that is a real mind-bender titled An Adventure In The Fourth Dimension. We end the show with a listener request from Alex Greer that is one of my favorite short stories. It is tiled We didn’t Do anything Wrong, Hardly. So press that play and let’s get started.

Featured Story – An Adventure In The Fourth Dimension

Our featured story for this week is a real mind-bender. It is not so much the story itself, but how it is told. It comes from Weird Tales Magazine, October of 1923. The story is titled An Adventure In The Fourth Dimension and just might be the most sophisticated science fiction story we have ever had.

Stories Include – Pattern Of Guilt, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Night Screams, Johnny Is It True – Strange But True, An Adventure In The Fourth Dimension, and We didn’t Do anything Wrong, Hardly.

Arizona Lightning

Arizona Lightning

Our story for this week comes from episode RAS #305 – Arizona Lightning.  It was sent in by Jasen of Carefree, Arizona here is his original email. If you want to hear the podcast version follow the link above.

Hello Ron,

I listen to the podcast every week and I love it. In fact my whole family listens to you!  I work for the APS group. Which provides electrical power for over a million people! I am what would be called a lineman and drive the desert regions of the state a lot.  This is what happened to me on a June night in 1995.

I was sent out on an inspection tour. This was a dream job and very coveted because you drive a set of power lines checking substations and recording values. Today this job is all computerized and we are only sent to a station when it reports an error.

I was driving between stations when I saw a flash of light. It was lightning, actual bolts spraying out from a lone, isolated storm. I had never seen lightning like that before. I stared in awe. It looked like jewelry, some kind of tiara, on a mountain. I never knew that 4:00 am could be so beautiful. I never knew it could be so terrifying.

I drove closer to the storm in hopes of capturing some pictures. I am not a photographer, but I always took my camera on these trips, because you never know what you will see out there. I was within five miles of the storm when the van stopped. I don’t mean turned off and rolled to a stop. I mean it just stopped!  I was wearing a seat belt, so no harm done, but I thought for sure I had hit something.  I grabbed for my radio to report in, but all I could hear was static. I got out of the car and looked at the front of the van, no damage and no barrier of any kind. I looked out at the storm and that is my last memory. The next thing I remember was being back in the van driving to the next substation. I glanced at my watch and it was 5:00 am. Almost an hour had passed.

The story does not end there. Several weeks later I took the roll of film that was in my camera, to be developed. There were three perfect pictures of the lightning storm. I don’t remember taking these pictures. Also, the quality of photos were better than my skills would allow. Lucky shots maybe, but why don’t I remember them?

RAS #479 – These Dreams

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this time we have stories about dreams. Four listeners sent in their night encounters and they are freaky.  We have out of body experiences, shadows, doppelgängers, bats, mice and more. These are some of the most eventful tales we have ever had. Also, on the show we have a science fiction classic titled Operation Distress. It comes from the pulp magazines and is read for us by Dale Grothman. This is a packed show.

Featured Story – Operation Distress

Our featured story is a science fiction classic.  It was written by Lester del Rey and first appeared in Galaxy Science Fiction – August of 1951. There are many things that could go wrong in space, but one that is more feared than any is the threat of picking up a new disease. Even during the space age of the sixties and seventies astronauts were held in quarantine to ensure that they hadn’t picked up something while up there. That is what our story is about today. It is titled Operation Distress and opens with these words.

Explorers who dread spiders and snakes prove that heroism is always more heroic to outsiders. Then there’s the case of the first space pilot to Mars who developed an itch

The Ghost Of Berlin

This time we have a story sent in by Shamir Dongsuk. Shamir lives in Ely Nevada and leads a ghost hunting group there. It first appeared in episode #281 – The Ghost Of Berlin, NV. Here is the email he sent in via the website:

Hello, my name is Shamir and I have a ghost tale for you. Many people have strange hobbies and I guess you have to put me on the list. You see me and my mates go to the many ghost towns of Nevada to hunt and find evidence. Most of the time we come home tired and empty handed. There was this one time we came home tired, scared and with this true story. The only evidence he has are some evps, bad pictures and soiled garments.

FACT: There are more ghost towns in Nevada than towns occupied by the living. By that count, it would take you years, if not a lifetime, to explore them all. One of them is the remote town of Berlin. Long before it was occupied by miners in the late 1800s, Berlin was home to a sharp-toothed reptile who roamed the warm ocean waters that overran Nevada 225 million years ago. In 1897, in the post-dinosaur era, Berlin was founded as a small mining camp with a peak population of 300.  The town consisted of, a stagecoach station, a stamp mill, a school, and two blacksmith shops. Its downfall began in 1907 when the miners demanded higher wages and were refused. Today, 13 buildings still stand and my group agree this place is haunted.

We set up camp at a nearby campground. Our first night out while adventurous and fun.. was quiet.  The second night we must have woken up because it was anything but quiet.  EVPs, strange noises and even some missing equipment was the theme.

It was that third and final night of hunting that had my team and I running for the hills.

I was in what was left of a small home.  The north wall was completely gone and the roof was nothing more than a few cross beams. I had a recorder and my partner, Barb, was sweeping with the EMF detector.  We both commented at the same time about a temperature drop.  When recording changes you say your name, time of day and make your statement. That is so that the person reviewing tape can know it was a team member and also record the information.

We made the statements and a then third voice, clear as day says, “ That happens here every night in the spring.” We both looked at each other and I watched barb go white.

I replied, “Oh have you lived here long?”  Complete silence.

It was barb, who spoke next. She said, “My detector is dead.”

I again turned to my friend and standing next to her was a complete full-figured gal. She was all white and dressed in what best could be described as a nightgown of some sort. “Barb,” I began, “You are not alone over there. I just…..

She screamed and started to flail about like she was being attacked by wasps. “Get it off!” she yelled.

I ran over to her and I noticed that the full-figured gal was running towards her as well.  I happened to get a look at her face and she looked as perplexed as I did. We arrived at Barb to find that a large tarantula was climbing up her leg. I knocked the thing off with my finger and then remembered the ghost. I looked around and she/it was gone.

Barb was still whining about the spider, but was calm enough to ask who it was that came to help. I told her and that was it Barb. She handed me her detector and went back to camp. I stayed in that building for the next three hours and never had anything else happen. After we returned home and reviewed all of the data there was nothing recorded for that time. A real shame.

We had one more event. Another group was in one of the blacksmiths shops. When a team member asked, “Do you want us to leave?” the reply was, “Yes”.  We thought the reply so cool we decided to accept the comment and ended the investigation.

Shamir Dongsuk

Ron’s Thoughts: That is an amazing story. Incredible! I had never heard of Ely, Nevada so I just had to look it up. It was founded as a stagecoach station along the Pony Express and Central Overland Route. Ely had a mining boom with the discovery of copper in 1906. Most of the stations connecting the First Transcontinental Railroad to these mines have long been removed. However the railroad to Ely is preserved as a heritage railway by the Nevada Northern Railway. It is known as the Ghost Train of Old Ely.  As of the 2010 census, the population of Ely was 4,255.

To Shamir I say thank you for your story that is a special one

-Ron
