RAS #505 – And It Comes Out Here

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we have what we think is an odd show with good stuff. I have a story for you that almost made this week’s podcast impossible, a shadow story that I almost couldn’t tell you, and a classic science fiction story that claims to be about time travel, but it really isn’t. That one I will leave to your imagination. So if any of that interests you press that play button and enjoy the show!

Featured Story – And It Comes Out Here

Our featured story this time is a bit quirky to be sure. It’s nonsense in a very sensible way. At first I thought that it might be too much, but as always I remember that this is Ron’s Amazing Stories and so it fits perfectly. It comes from the pen of Lester Del Ray and first appeared in Galaxy Science Fiction Magazine in February of 1951. It is an odd tale that has an odd title which is … And It Comes Out Here.

There is one fact no sane man can quarrel with … everything has a beginning and an end.
But some men aren’t sane; thus it isn’t always so!

Other Stories Include – A shooting at a Gas Station, Fallen Trees – A Sad Story, A Shadow’s Nightmare, and …And It Comes Out Here.

I Hate Trains!

Trains! Love them or hate them they have been around for a long time. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of scary stories that have been associated with train travel? Believe me when I tell you that I have. I have a fear of trains, but I love to ride them. It is the mystery associated with them that gives me a thrill. Maybe that is why there are so many stories about them. Our listener’s story comes from Lucas Tens originally from Franca São Paulo (That’s in Brazil – I looked it up). He tells us this story titled, I Hate Trains

My father worked for the RFFSA in Brazil all of his life until retirement in 1997. That meant we traveled by train for free and we did it a lot. I loved the train and still do. Today however, when I board, I look around first.

It was the summer of 1985 and my family was going on vacation to my aunt’s estancias (or Ranch). We boarded the train and split up as was the custom.  We each had a favorite part and for me it was the dining car. I would head to the back, pick a seat and watch people imagining who they were and where they were going. It was a busy day and from time to time people would ask to sit with me. I always said yes and would make up fantastic stories about myself and why I was on the train. It was all in good fun.

A dark man, that is the best way I can describe him, came to sit with me. He was tall, but not too tall, chubby, but not too chubby and kept his face covered with a large fedora. I found him utterly fascinating. He had a deep voice and it rumbled, rivaling the sound of the train! The first thing he said to me was, “So you like stories?”

I squeaked out, “Yes Sir”

He proceeded to tell me every story that I had lied about that day and he told them back to me in detail! I asked him how he knew about this and he shrugged and said that he lives here.

“On the train?” I countered.

He only answered with a yes.

I was uncomfortable and launched into a long discussion with the man trying to justify my actions. It was then a woman walked up and asked if she could sit-down. I turned to her in disgust and was about to say there was no room. Then I realized I was sitting alone. The dark-man was gone.

I tried to find him on the train, but there was no sign of him. Talked to everyone including my family and not a single person had seen him. I even asked the conductor who he was and he knew of no one that matched that description. Finally, we reached our stop. As I walked with my family up the boarding platform I happened to glance back at the train. There peering up at me was the dark-man. People were passing through him like he wasn’t there.

Lucas Ten – Franca São Paulo

Lucas went on to say that he told this tale to many people over the years and never found anyone who had a similar experience. To this day every time he boards a train he looks for his friend in hopes of finishing his discussion. My thought is to best leave the dead alone and count your blessings.

RAS #504 – Sub-Basement

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this time the show theme is the dinosaur, but in retrospect, that might be pushing it just a bit. In the end, you will have to decide if it was a fitting theme or not. On the program today we have stories from you guys, a classic from the OTR series Lights Out! and we end with a brand new Not So Important Times In History where we head to Mons, Belgium in the year 1914. Did Angels really defeat the Germans there? Listen to this podcast to find out.

Featured Story – Sub-Basement

Our featured story this week comes from the OTR series Lights Out. The quality of these old shows is so impressive that they are worth hearing again and again. This one takes place in a sub-basement where it is rumored that there is a small railroad to deliver merchandise. According to Lights Out it may even be filled with dinosaurs! The story is appropriately titled Sub-Basement and it first aired on August 24, 1943.

Other Stories Include – Jewelry Train Heist, Jurassic Park – Audible, The Run-Around Man, Awesome Hotel And The Ghosts Are Pretty Cool Too, Sub-Basement, and Not So Important Times In History – The Angels Of Mons.

The Fog

I get stories from all over the world. But you might ask where the most stories come from. That hands down has to be from New Mexico and Texas. I really don’t have an explanation for it, but I have been told, “Things just happen here. A lot!”. Who said that to me? My very own brother. He lives in New Mexico and here is just one of the many tales that he has told us over the years.

My wife, two sons and I had been living in New Mexico for several years and loved to travel around exploring the wonders and mysteries of “the Land of Enchantment”. One of those mysteries is associated with the name Roswell. Many believe an extraterrestrial vehicle crashed there in 1947. Actually, that crash is connected to many sites north and west of that city, most prominently the village of Corona in a bleak section of high plains near a town called Vaughn.

One gray morning in early spring my wife and I and our two sons set out from Albuquerque on the seven hour trip to Carlsbad to visit the famous caverns there. We left at about 9 a.m. The plan was to be settled at our motel by dinnertime. Our transportation was a Saturn bought just weeks earlier.

We were about twenty miles south of Vaughn listening to some of Daniel Pinkwater’s funny stories on tape when suddenly the Saturn rolled to a silent stop with no engine or electrical power. I remember thinking this lonely stretch of road about 50 miles northwest of Roswell was a bad place for a breakdown. Then I noticed that the day’s gloomy sky seemed to be closing around us like a fog. I watched as the fog pushed to the surface of every car window.

My next memory is the four of us sitting in the car on the same shoulder. The fog was gone. My wife started the car which fired instantly with the tape still playing and we drove off as if nothing had happened, except for the fact that no one said a word all the way to Roswell.

On arriving in Roswell my boys said they were hungry so we stopped at a family buffet.  Seeing a sign that they closed at 8 and realizing that was less than an hour away my wife became upset and angry because she had expected to be in Carlsbad, which was still a pretty long drive, long before this. She didn’t want to stop or eat anything but we did and eventually arrived in Carlsbad at about 10p.m.

So what happened? To this day our family has never talked about that trip, not even once. But I assure you, everything happened exactly as I told you.

Your Brother Jim – New Mexico

Well, it is an amazing story with no explanation. Sometime when you’re not busy do the google search, “Strange Stories In New Mexico”. Then settle in for a while because there are a lot of them to read. My thanks to my brother Jim for sharing that one.

This Week’s Podcast: On the podcast this week it is Kind of a Dinosaur week with other stories thrown in. In fact we even head to the sub-sub-basement of a department store with horrific results. RAS #503 – Ray Bradbury Day

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we celebrate Raymond Bradbury, author, poet, scriptwriter, and of course hero to anyone who has read one of his books. Ray was born on August 20th and this would have been his 101st birthday. I have tried to make him part of the show and I think you will enjoy the result. We have three stories from you guys, and an adaptation of probably his most famous work, The Martian Chronicles

Ray Bradbury was a prolific and influential author with a career that spanned decades. From his first published story in 1938, Hollerbochen’s Dilemma, to his Hugo award-winning novel Fahrenheit 451, the author was a master of the science-fiction genre. What you may not know about him was just how much he loved the story, which of course makes him perfect for Ron’s Amazing Stories.

Featured Story – The Martian Chronicles

Our featured story is a radio adaptation of The Martian Chronicles. There were many of these throughout the golden age of radio, but most took individual chapters from the book and presented it as a complete story. What we have is the entire book in 30 minutes. Sounds impossible? Well …it should be, but they did it. The production comes from the OTR series Dimension X and comes complete with the original commercials and radio spots. So, what we really have is a time machine taking us back to August 18th, 1950.

Other Stories Include – The Tulip Murder, The Martian Chronicles – Audiobook, The Ghoulish Caller, My Walk On The Beach, Grandma’s Rocking Chair, and The Martian Chronicles – Story.
