The Man With The Red Eyes

Our story comes from returning contributor and friend of the podcast Akunna Musa. This is the third story he has submitted, but the first time he is using his real name. Akunna hails from New York and is an Uber driver there. His story should remind us all to always listen to grandma.

The Man With The Red Eyes

Hello Ron.  Once again, this is a story my dad told me from when he was younger. He was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. One night he was walking home. The sun was just starting to set and in Lagos at the time there weren’t many street lights. So when it got dark out it got DARK out. My dad had been told by my Abue (Grandma) many times to not stay out too late and be home before the sun goes down. He was a very stubborn boy (according to his sister) and always blew off everything my grandma would say. On this night he definitely should’ve listened to her, and if I’m not mistaken after this he did. I am using americanized slang in this story, but try to keep in mind that Yerba is the language that he would have spoken at the time.

As he walked he saw a man standing on a street corner. The man looked at my dad and said, “You should get home, kid, it’s getting late.”

My dad, being the jerk that he was, said, “Screw you old man don’t tell me what to do!”, and went about his leisurely walk home.

After a couple of blocks he saw the same man standing on a different street corner. The man said the same thing he said before. My dad didn’t think much of it, told him to go bleep himself and continued walking. After a few blocks he saw the same man, but this time he had a big snarling dog with him. The old man said the same thing, this time with the dog growling and baring its teeth. Dad was a little more bothered this time, understandably so, but still told the old man to shove it and kept walking.

He was nearly home at this point. The sun was gone, the moon bright in the sky, and yes he saw him again. This time he was just laughing maniacally. Not only is he laughing, but he has two dogs now. According to my dad, the dog’s and man’s eyes were red, and as soon as he walked past them the man let the dogs go.

My dad took off running as fast as he possibly could, the dogs barking, snarling, and giving chase. As soon as he reached grandma’s house he started pounding on the door furiously begging her to open up. Once the door was opened he flew inside and told her to shut it fast. She was trying to figure out what was happening so my dad told her about the man and the dogs. My grandma said he was being ridiculous and said there’s nothing out there. She opened the door and saw nothing. However, my dad swore that he could still see the dogs pacing outside back and forth. Teeth sharp, eyes red, fur black, and waiting for him. – Akunna Musa

A Traveler In Time

Our featured story was written by August Derleth who was a writer and the first publisher of the writings of H. P. Lovecraft. So, I’ll bet you are thinking that you are in for a horror story. Our story today follows more of a HG Wells feel than H.P. Lovecraft’s horror. It tells the story of a reporter and his encounter with time travel. It is a strange story, full of twists and turns. It is titled A Traveler In Time and first appeared in the pulp magazine Orbit in 1953.

“YOU CAN’T ALWAYS ESCAPE EVILS BY RUNNING AWAY FROM THEM…BUT IT MAY HELP!”

The Ghost Of The Abandoned Railway

This story comes from Toni with an I and that is all I know about her. I did play around with Toni’s IP address and can confirm that she lives in … Wait for it.. Somewhere in the United States. How about that? She did title her story The Ghost Of The Abandoned Railway. These are the types of stories that really freak me out.

The Ghost Of The Abandoned Railway

Some time ago I was out hiking with my friends. The trail ended near an abandoned railway track. It was around 9 pm. Now you might be asking why we would be hiking so late? That is a very good question.

We were walking down the railway and when we got to a crossing that was also abandoned and quite creepy I might add. We heard something in the bushes. I shone my flashlight on the area but nothing was there. Then out of nowhere there came a freaking scream! It was high pitched like a woman’s scream and quite melodic. We all turned to look in that direction. What I saw I will never forget. Standing there in the dark was a human-like figure. It was all white with long hair and It had black holes for eyes. It just came from behind a tree and it then disappeared as quickly as it came. The tree was a small sapling so nothing could hide behind it.  Well, we all freaked out and ran towards the crossing shack. We hid there for a while, but nothing else happened.

The next day I did some research and it turns out a woman died on that crossing just before that track was closed for good.  I am not sure what it was but we all saw the same thing.  – Toni (with an I)

Well Toni I I am not sure what I would have done. I might not have run to the crossing shack, but would have just kept on running.  I too wonder why you were hiking at 9pm! Thank you for your story.

RAS #619 – The Heart Of Kali

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we have an odd set of stories from different genres. Ron reviews an audiobook from Zane Grey titled Riders of the Purple Sage (a classic western). Then we head to space for a science fiction adventure from the pages of the 1960s pulp mags. The story is titled Flamedown and is exciting! We end the show with our featured story from the OTR classic series Escape. In this one, one man’s greed leads to murder and in the end justice. It is titled The Heart Of Kali. So pres that play button and enjoy the show.

Featured Story – The Heart Of Kali

Art for Flame Down As Read by Johan G.

Our featured story comes from the OTR series Escape. Escape brings together everything that was good about old-time radio. The title itself almost sums up the very essence of what radio drama is all about. It was truly one of the best anthology series of the golden age of radio. Our story today is special in another way. All good things do come to end, eventually, and such was true of Escape. This story was the very last episode to air. It happened on September 5, 1954. It tells the story of a man whose passion gets the best of him, and as the saying goes, what goes around comes around. It is titled The Heart Of Kali.

Other Stories Include – Man In The Back Seat, Review – Riders Of The Purple Sage, Flame Down, and The Heart Of Kali
