My Haunted House

Our story was sent into the show by Ray Owens who lives in the great state of Pennsylvania. Home of the Steelworker and appearly ghosts. Here is the story Ray has titled My Haunted House.

My wife and I live in an old Victorian style house in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I’m not really sure when it was built but it was at least in the late 1800s. When we first moved in everything was peachy. We get up in the morning, have our coffee, get to work on restoring the house, then call it a day, and move on. We bought the house originally because we fell in love with the design and we knew that it just had to be restored to its original glory. We were newly retired and we had the time and the gumption to get’er done.

My Haunted House

It was after the third year that things started to go strange. One morning I got up and I was standing in my bathroom. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I thought for sure it was my wife and I turned to find nothing. At the same time my wife was down in the kitchen preparing breakfast. She said that she was sure that I walked into the kitchen, went to the refrigerator, opened it up, took something out, and vanished. Of course as I already stated I was upstairs in the bathroom being touched on the shoulder.

One of the more strange events we had was when one night we woke up to a “Yelp”, no other way to describe it, and a voice telling us that we had left the on heat downstairs. Well, the house has central heating and so therefore it doesn’t matter where you leave the heat on it just maintains temperature so the comment made no sense. The next morning we got up, went downstairs, and found a burn spot on the floor. It was a perfect circle and the first thing my wife said was that it must be an indoor crop circle. It is still there today for anyone that cares to see it.

One afternoon we were taking care of our granddaughter when I heard some giggling coming from the living room. Thinking that my wife was playing with our granddaughter I went to see what was going on. As I came into the room my wife also came in from the side door. We found our granddaughter rolling on the floor laughing and giggling away. When we asked her who she was playing with she responded with the nice old lady with the white hair.

Benjamin, Benji for short, is our Labrador. We often find him in the living room staring at an old rocker that came with the house. Sometimes the chair rocks all by itself.  Benji just stares at that old rocker for hours at a time. He will curl up at the foot of it and sleep. My wife said that one afternoon she came into the room and saw Benji’s fur moving like someone was petting him. She grabbed her phone to capture it, but it stopped before she could get set up.

All of the hunting’s with this house seem pretty benign and we have never ever felt any kind of malevolent behavior. I have done a lot of research on the house and I can’t find anything that would indicate that someone had even died in this place. My guess is that a former owner just doesn’t want to leave. – Ray Owens

I love ghost stories like this one. They are what I think ghost stories should be all about. Ghosts get so much bad publicity that it is nice to hear about one that is just strange. Thank you Ray!

The Scratching Ghost Dog

I think the most common paranormal story is the head scratcher. Those stories that confound logic. Here is one sent by Timothy O’Leary, who writes to us from St. Paul, Minnesota. He has titled his story, The Scratching Ghost Dog.

I believe there could be a spirit animal in my house, or at least one that visits. I am not sure what it all means but I have had three experiences that give me pause. After you have heard these stories I would very much like to have someone debunk them. It would make me feel better.

Experience 1 – I was home alone with my son, who was almost one at the time. He was asleep upstairs and I had the baby monitor on. I heard a faint dog bark coming from the monitor. Worried it was next-door neighbor’s dog and that it would wake my son, I went up to check on him. He was asleep and the window was closed. I looked outside and didn’t see or hear a dog. I went back downstairs and a few minutes later I heard a dog bark so loud it sounded like it was directly into the monitor. I ran upstairs again to check on my son, but found nothing. This time I decided to stay to see if I could hear anything. I stood in the bathroom doorway, which is at a right angle to my son’s room. The bedroom door was propped open by a long toy snake. That toy slowly started to slide away from the door. I watched in disbelief. Suddenly the door slammed shut and my son started crying. Terrified, I burst through the door, grabbed my son, and ran downstairs.

Later, feeling a bit better, and perhaps a little silly I decided to go to bed. I took my son with me to sleep in our room. I walked to the bottom of the stairs and my two cats were around my feet waiting to be fed. They started walking up the stairs with me a couple of steps ahead. About halfway up the stairs they stopped, hissed and bolted back downstairs. It scared me enough to stop me going up. When my wife got home I told her about it. She said that she had heard a dog earlier that morning.

Experience 2 – One night around 2am my wife heard scratching on the door. We keep it closed to stop the cats from coming in at night. At first she ignored it, but it got so persistent that she got up, switched on the hall light, opened the door, and looked down the stairs. She noticed the dining room light was on and could see a small dark shadow moving around in front of the front  door. Thinking it was one of the cats she walked downstairs expecting to see our black cat, but she wasn’t there. My wife walked room to room looking for the cats. When she got to the kitchen she found both cats asleep in their bed. Scared, she turned all the lights on and went back to bed. The scratching stopped.

Experience 3 – It was my son’s birthday party a couple of years ago and my brother was sitting in my living room. When he turned to pick up his drink, he saw a small black dog walk into my kitchen. He knows we have a black cat, but said this was bigger and it intrigued him enough to get up and have a look. He walked into the kitchen and nothing was there. He knew nothing about the previous events that had occurred.

We’ve heard scratching at the bedroom door many times only to see nothing when opening it. My son is six years old now and has said that a small black dog has sat on the end of his bed at night. It couldn’t be either cat because they aren’t allowed upstairs at night and we ensure they are downstairs before we go to bed.  So, what do you think? Is this a common thing? I should also mention that we’ve never owned a dog. I did have one growing up as a child but he was huge and not a spec of black on him. – Timothy O’Leary

Well Tim, I have no idea about that, but I can answer one of your questions. No this is not a common thing! – Ron

RAS #621 – Brave New World

On this episode of Ron’s Amazing Stories we present a tale that should shock you. Brave New World was written by English author Aldous Huxley in 1931. It took the world by storm, but not everyone was happy about it. In fact, it is one of the most banned novels on record.

The story is set in a dystopian future where society is controlled by a totalitarian government. People are born in test tubes and conditioned from birth to be happy and obedient. There is no freedom, no individuality, and no dissent. The protagonist of the story is a young man named John who is born outside of the system. He is raised in the countryside and learns about the true nature of the world. When he is brought to the city, he is shocked by what he sees. He cannot believe that people would give up their freedom for a life of comfort and conformity. John’s story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of totalitarianism. It is a warning about what can happen when we allow the government to control too much of our lives. A Brave New World is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that is still relevant today. It is a story that everyone should hear, even if it makes them uncomfortable.

Featured Story – Brave New World

Aldous Huxley

Our featured story was first published by Chatto & Windus in August of 1932. It is a novel by English author Aldous Huxley. What we will hear is the radio adaptation done by CBS Radio Workshop. The author himself does the narration and the quality of the recording is amazing! It is titled Brave New World and it first aired on January 27, 1956.
