One of the stories Milton wrote for Galaxy magazine was titled The Sense Of Wonder.  It looks at a society that is told what to do, when to do it, and who it is acceptable to do it with. But what if you were born different and had your own notion between what is and what is not. What consequences would that lead to? Milton’s story has been adapted for radio by the OTR series X Minus One and it first aired on April 24, 1956.

Battle In The Restroom

Our story for this time comes from Apple Sheran of Boston. I wrote back to Apple about her name. She told me that her parents “met” in an apple orchard the night she came into being. They decided that would be her name. For the record her full legal name is Apple Orchard Sheran and here is her story:

Hey Ron, So this happened a bit ago. I was in my high school production of Oklahoma. We had a cast party the closing night of the play. It was held at the school. My friends and cast were there from around 9:00 pm to 12:00 am. Near the end of the night I left the party to go to the bathroom. As I was in the cubicle I heard a man and a woman arguing just outside my door. As far as I knew I was the only one there! I was nervous, so I kept quiet, but they just wouldn’t leave! Finally, I decided to let them know I was there. “Hello”, I said. Everything went quiet, and I didn’t hear the bathroom door open or close. I opened my stall and found the room empty!

Battle In The Restroom

I headed back to my friends only to see them bolting down the stairs towards me. They had all heard strange noises and screaming. Even the drama teacher and chaperones came flying out of the party room. A few of us went back up there to check things out. There was no one up there, and no one downstairs either so we decided to end the party and go home. I never found out why or what happened. – Apple Sheran

Well Apple, that is  an amazing story. An entire party of people having the same experience is so very rare. I don’t think we have ever had anything like it before. I guess that it could have been a major prank, but that doesn’t explain your experience. So very strange. Thank you for sharing it

Those Green Eyes!

We have one amazing story. It was sent in by Rodney Andrews who hails from Hart’s Crossing, Pennsylvania. It reminds us how fragile we as humans can be and not to take what we say to others lightly. Here is Rod’s story.

When I was 14, I had an experience I will never forget. I was the kind of kid who always got picked on in school. The kind of target people loved. Sometimes I’d stand up for myself and other times I was intimidated. When I was a kid, I didn’t know anything. Today at age 64, I still don’t know a thing, but I am happy to be here to tell my story.

One night, I decided I wasn’t going to deal with it anymore and would I self delete. I’d been planning it in my bedroom, thinking of how to do it. I cried a little, said it would all be over, and I wouldn’t have to deal with it anymore. The next thing I knew I wasn’t in my bed. I’m floating. Something has me. I stare at the closet mirrors and I see my body hanging in the air, blankets dangling. All I did was float. Then I fell into my bed. I still remember the shaking and the cold shiver going down my spine (I’m feeling it right now as I’m typing this).

Those Green Eyes - Rodney Andrews

Back to the story because It wasn’t over. There were two green eyes staring at me. TWO BIG GREEN EYES. I’ll never forget them. They were like emeralds but they were bright and looked like they were on fire. They just kept looking at me and I kept looking at them. I remember it was 1:14 am when I was grabbed and I kept staring at those crazy eyes until the sun came up. I don’t remember if they ever faded or disappeared. I just remember I prayed for the sun to come and that I would still be alive.

The next morning I told my parents. They didn’t believe me, no one really believed me. Everyone thought I made it up except my friend Mark. People just thought it was some crazy story that icky Rodney made up.

Years later I saw the Stone Tapes. I never saw or heard of the movie until I was 23. In the ending the mysterious creature shows up and kills the main heroine. It had Green Eyes! I broke down. Those were the eyes I saw. I’m not a small guy but I freaked out and crawled under my counter and hid in the space between the wall and cabinet. I called my friend Mark and It took him 30 minutes to calm me down.  I don’t know if it was a ghost, demonic, or something from another plane of existence. I do know that it saved my life. I don’t know how. I don’t need to know. I don’t want to know. – Rodney Andrews

That is one amazing story. I looked up the movie The Stone Tape. It was released in 1972 and told the tale of a research team from an electronics company. They move into an old Victorian house to start work on finding a new recording medium. Then team member Jill Greeley witnesses a ghost. They decide not only to analyze the apparition, but to exercise it as well – with terrifying results. I don’t know how much of that story relates to yours, but I can honestly see how it could be a trigger for you. I am thankful for one thing. You are still here. Thank you Rodney for you story.

This Week’s Podcast: On the show this week we have a classic pulp fiction sci-fi story that represents the 1960s ideology. It tells of how powerful our minds can be when given unlimited resources. It is titled The Creature Inside and first appeared in the magazine Worlds of Tomorrow in December of 1963. The room was small, but it held a whole universe—and Norcriss had no place in it!
