Jimmy

Our story comes from Dayne Wattley of Santa Fe, New Mexico. For those of you that listen to the podcast a lot, I know what you are saying, “Another one from NM?”  Well, yes this is another tale to come from the state whose motto is Crescit Eundo. Translated from Latin, it means “It grows as it goes”. It appears that its oddness is not limited to fantastic stories. Dayne writes:

I hear you like strange stories from NM. Here is my entry. I was driving from Santa Fe to Las Vegas. Now, before you think this a long story I am talking about Las Vegas, NM (Population 14,565 and not a slot machine in site). However, there are a lot of lonely roads to the city.  I was about a half an hour out when I saw on the side of the road an old car broke down. There beside it was an even older man with this thumb out. I stopped and asked if he need help, to which he said he said, “Oh My Yes”

He hopped in the car and said he needed to get to Las Vegas. We drove and right off the bat I thought this guy was strange. He was talking like he was from another era. He said his name was Jimmy. He talked a lot about Roswell, but it was the way he was talking, you would think it all just happened. I ignored it and in truth it was nice to have someone to chat with. Just before we got to town he said that this was fine and that I could drop him here. I pulled over at diner and he hopped out, waved and said goodbye.

I started to drive away and happened to look back. He was gone! I mean gone-gone. There is no way he could have made the diner and there was nothing else there. I went back to look, nothing and I even checked a nearby run off trench. He had disappeared.

I know it was crazy but I had to do it. I drove back to where I had picked the guy up and the car was gone. Nothing was there. I drove back to the diner and went inside. I must have had a certain look, because the waitress asked, “is everything okay honey?”

I told her my story and after a bit of silence and a giggle or two she told me that I had just met Jimmy.  The funny thing was I had not told her his name.

I Shined A Flashlight On It

This short tale comes from Lydia Hansen all the way from Sydney Australia.  Lydia writes:

Hello Ron. Greetings from Sydney. I love your show and tell everyone about it. You are fantastic to listen to and I never miss it. I don’t have a whopper of a story for you, but it did happen.

I was twelve years old. My dad is a rancher and we lived out on Anna Creek most of my life. One morning, my dad asked me to get up early to take up sentry duties from my brother. We were having troubles with a pack of dingos in the region. They were stealing chicks and other small animals from locals. I relieved my brother and took up the watch. I had a pistol so that I could scare them off and alert my dad. It was still night. I saw a dark humanoid shape coming towards me. I thought it was my dad so I called out to it. The thing stopped and seemed to be looking in my direction, but I couldn’t see any features let alone eyes. I shined a flashlight at it. It disappeared from view as soon as the light hit it, but when I moved it away it would return to view. This went on for a few minutes or so, and then it howled like a dingo. I fired my pistol in the air and it vanished. A few minutes later my dad arrived and I told him what I saw. He said that he had seen the very same thing earlier that night. We never found it or saw it again. I don’t think it was a dingo, but I am not sure.

I did a little research on this and have to say I couldn’t find any reference to anything like it. How very strange and scary. I did learn that Aboriginal people have maintained and developed a rich folklore centered on spirits and ghosts. However, I couldn’t gain access to them online. Perhaps those archives may help you learn more. Truly an amazing story.

The Jumping Man

This story comes from Shanell Whitman who lives in Atlanta, Georgia. This one first appeared in episode #468 which was titled a bundle of stories. WE had a total of nine tales of mystery, sci-fi and more. You should check it out!

Hello Ron, I loved your stories. I guess I should have said, “our stories”. I’ve had two experiences in my life that have put little doubt that there are spirits or least supernatural beings.

When I was younger my friend and I were upstairs playing a game in my mother’s bedroom. As we were finishing up we made our way down the hallway. You had to pass my bedroom to get to the stairs. As we pass we both peer in and what do we see? A little man sitting on the edge of my bed, clear as day, clear as both of us standing next to each other… What sets it apart is that we both saw it , we both remember it vividly and crystal clear. He was just sitting there smiling and then vanished. The other day I ran into my friend at the post office. I asked her if she remembered that day. She reached for her phone and produced a photo. It was a hand drawn picture of the little man. Then she said, “Every damn Day!”

Another experience was when I was out the door on my way to school with my mother. At the time we had no pets and my father was out of town. As we were leaving the house, upstairs it sounded as though someone was jumping up and down. We glanced up at my bedroom window and there was that little man again. My mom ran upstairs to see and when she got there the room was empty. We quickly left, but we both vividly remember this as well. We never saw the little man again, so it seems the spirit may have moved on!

Encounter In The Park

This story comes from Sandy Harmon. Sandy didn’t say where she hails from and the story doesn’t give me any clues. But here is sandy’s story:

Thank you for the podcast! I listen each week and marvel at the stuff you come up with. It is so entertaining.  I want to share a story that happened to me in our local park.

I was walking in a local park when I got this feeling that I was being followed. I turned around and there was no one there and just to be on the safe side I took a second look. I kept on walking and coming from the other direction I saw a man walking his dog. This made me feel a little better since now I wasn’t really alone but I still had the feeling that I was being watched. As I walked by the man he stopped me and asked if I had seen anyone in the area. I responded that I hadn’t, but asked him why he was asking. He told me that he had this strange sensation that he was being watched. I told him my story and we both laughed about it. We continued to talk, when another lady came up to us and said that she could not help but overhear us and that she too had felt like someone had been following her and watching. This was too strange.  We all chatted a bit longer, thought that we must be crazy, laughed about that, then went our separate ways.

That night I had a dream about walking in that very same park. I remember in my dream that I was looking around and a bum walking up to me and asking for some food. I told him that I was out walking and then I didn’t have anything for him this time. That was the dream, and the odd thing is that it felt so very real. The next morning I was listening to the radio and one of the stories that they were reporting was that the night before a transient man had been found dead in that park. He had died of natural causes and authorities were having trouble identifying him.

Ron, that is my story.  It’s true and it probably doesn’t mean anything but I don’t know. – Sandy Harmon.

Well thank you for your story Sandy, that is a head scratcher for sure. I have to say I doubt it was a coincidence that all three of you felt the same way at the same time, but it could happen I guess. I will lead more towards what I think you were getting at. The man was left wondering a bit. I do hope he found his way to the light.

Unknown Eyes

Our story for this week was sent in by friend to the podcast Cody Apedaile. He and his wife have contributed several times to the show and have been what I like to call friends. Here is a story that Cody sent in for episode #442.

I worked as an electrician for a little bit. Since I was just starting, I got to apprentice under a journeyman. We will call him Joe for this story.

Joe and I, got to do some retrofitting for an old courthouse. They were upgrading their heating and cooling. Our job was to get power from the main panel in the basement to a new panel on the second floor. The basement was cramped and full of old, useless equipment, and contained the small portal that led into the crawl space. The portal was lined with pipes that left very little room for someone to crawl through. I, being of a thinner build, got to be the one to shimmy through the tight portal into the crawl space.

The crawl space was the awkward height of being too short to stand, but it was not necessary to crawl either. The walls in the crawl space were concrete, making cave darkness a thing. With my headlamp on, I delved into the depths of the crawl space to go around to the section where we needed to feed the conduit through the wall and up through the floor. I took the measurements that we needed and yelled them through the fist sized hole to Joe on the other side. To save the battery of my slowly dying headlamp, I would sit in the almost complete darkness until Joe asked for the next measurement. After we were both satisfied, I crawled back into the depths of the black.

As I rounded the first corner I froze as my headlamp caught two red pin pricks at the far side of the building. The next instant they were gone.  I held my gaze to that spot as I cautiously made my way to the center of the portal that held the path to the exit. As I exited feet first to the main basement, I swore I saw those eyes peering around the corner at me.  To say that I was relieved to be on vacation when the conduit in the crawl space was installed is an understatement
