Ghost Stories with Sylvia – Volume Two

We welcome back Sylvia Shults to the show this week for more ghost stories and to talk about her new book 44 Years in Darkness: A True Story of Madness, Tragedy, and Shattered Love. She has been writing for years, and recently made the switch from fiction to nonfiction. Following a lifetime spent in the pursuit of the weird and the strange, she now shares that passion with her readers. Her fiction (both horror and romance) is still floating around out there, but these days she concentrates on living a childhood dream — telling true ghost stories. Her book, Fractured Spirits: Hauntings at the Peoria State Hospital, was featured on an episode of the SyFy Channel’s hit show Ghost Hunters. It is the first book to examine the famously haunted asylum from both a historical and a supernatural perspective, and it was nominated for an award from the Illinois State Historical Society.

HE #12 – Curses: Myth or Fact

Curses Myth or FactWelcome to the 12th episode of the Horror Express. On this episode Jason and Ron talk about Curses. Also, we have a story about a curse with an Egyptian twist. No mummy’s just a bone! If that wasn’t enough, Jason has collected some interesting emails from you guys! So, come join us for this horrific train ride. How? Press the play button below.

Curses

A curse is any expressed wish that some form of adversity or misfortune will befall or attach to an entity, person, place or object. In particular, “curse” may refer to such a wish or pronouncement made effective by a supernatural or spiritual power by magic or witchcraft. A curse can also be called a hex or a jinx. In many belief systems, the curse itself (or accompanying ritual) is considered to have some causative force in the result. To reverse or eliminate a curse is sometimes called “removal” or “breaking”, and is often believed to require elaborate rituals or prayers.

RAS #262 – The Good Ghost

The Good GhostOn this episode of Ron’s Amazing Stories we continue the Month of Spooky 2016 with a great a show and a good ghost. Of course we will have a Five Minute Mystery for you. Then we will follow the exploits of a ghost who has a problem. He was murdered and by the rules he can only kill one living person to avenge his death. But who should he kill? Also we have Ambrose Bierce short story and a ghost boy who wants his fire marshal’s car. I’ll bet you can’t wait to hit that play button.

As I said we have we have short story written by Ambrose Bierce. During his lifetime, Bierce was better known as a journalist than as a fiction writer. His most popular stories were written in rapid succession between 1888 and 1891. Bierce helped pioneer the psychological horror story. Our story is simply called Staley Fleming’s Hallucination.

RAS #261 – Mencken Newspaperman

Mencken NewspapermanOn Ron’s Amazing Stories we have a strange but true OTR story for you. It is the dramatized account of the early life of legendary journalist H.L. Mencken newspaperman, and is based from his own journal notes. It was produced by CBS Radio Workshop. The story is called, Bring on the Angels, and first aired on June 8th 1956, Just a few months after his death at age 76.

Also on this program, we share one of Mencken’s commentaries on Zoos , a poem he wrote and we top it all off with the RAS news and a five minute mystery. Does that sound like a pretty good show? It think so, but I might be a bit bias.

-Ron

RAS #260 – The Scarlet Pimpernel

The Scarlet PimpernelOn this episode of Ron’s Amazing Stories we present one the golden age of radio’s best plays, The Scarlet Pimpernel.

The tale is set in 1792, during the early stages of the French Revolution. Marguerite St. Just is the wife of wealthy English fop Sir Percy Blakeney, a baronet. Before their marriage, Marguerite took revenge upon the Marquis de St. Cyr, who had ordered her brother to be beaten for his romantic interest in the Marquis’ daughter. This all ended with the unintended consequence of the Marquis and his sons being sent to the guillotine. When Percy found out, he became estranged from his wife. Marguerite, for her part, has become disillusioned with Percy’s shallow, dandyish lifestyle.

This where our story begins and it is handled quite well by Lux Radio Theater. This production brings back one its stars from the original 1934 movie cast, The Scarlet Pimpernel himself, Leslie Howard. Playing the role of his estranged wife is Olivia de Havilland. Quite the cast, and two of hollywood’s greatest, to be sure. The film was adapted to radio by Lux in 1938 and played in December of that year.
