Classic Science-Fiction – Knock

Aldrich and BrownThomas Bailey Aldrich (November 11, 1836 – March 19, 1907) wrote: Imagine all human beings swept off the face of the earth, excepting one man. Imagine this man in some vast city, Tripoli or Paris. Imagine him on the third or fourth day of his solitude sitting in a house and hearing a ring at the door-bell.

Fredric Brown (October 29, 1906 – March 11, 1972) condensed Aldrich’s text to a sweet little action story that is only two sentences long. He wrote: The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door…

Brown’s story was titled Knock and was published in the December 1948 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories. There have been three different radio adaptations (Dimension X, X Minus One and Sci-Fi Channel’s Seeing Ear Theatre).

Although, the first two lines are a complete story by themselves. Brown added to it just a bit. The Zan have killed off all life on Earth other than pairs of specimens for their zoo of exotic Earth fauna. Walter Phelan is the last man on Earth, but Grace Evans, the last woman, is not overly impressed with him and maintains her distance. The ageless Zan, become disturbed when, one by one, their captive animals begin to die. They turn to Walter for advice.

It is an amazing story and deserves to be heard on the podcast this week.  We will play the version from X-minus One. Also on the show, we have a Bigfoot tale from Atlanta.

Preview: The Story of Rosslyn Chapel

On the podcast this week we have an amazing story that has its roots in a 15th-century chapel located at the village of Roslin, Midlothian, Scotland. It is told to us by a listener who has visited this amazing site many times. However, on an afternoon in the early nineties, his visit was anything but routine. Brownies, witches, fairies or just his imagination? You will have to listen to his tale and decide for yourself.

Rosslyn Chapel - Small PictureRosslyn Chapel was founded on a small hill above Roslin Glen as a Catholic church in the mid-15th century. The chapel was founded by William Sinclair, First Earl of Caithness of the Scoto-Norman Sinclair family. Rosslyn Chapel is the third Sinclair place of worship at Roslin, the first being in Roslin Castle and the second which is now Roslin Cemetery. There are more than 110 carvings of “Green Men” in and around the chapel. They depict humanoid faces with greenery all around them, often growing out of their mouths. They are found in all areas of the chapel. Other carvings represent plants, including depictions of wheat, strawberries, and lilies.

Since the late 1980s, the chapel has also been featured in speculative theories concerning a connection of Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, and the Holy Grail. It was prominently featured in the 2003 bestselling novel The Da Vinci Code and its 2006 film adaptation.

The listener’s story is told about an afternoon spent at Rosslyn Chapel. The plan was to visit the site and enjoy the grounds. What actually happened is best left to him to explain. You won’t want to miss this podcast.

Arizona Lightning – A True Story

A few weeks ago, a listener to the podcast sent me an email. He said, he had a story that I might like, but he was neither a storyteller or a writer. I am always up for a good story, so I got him on the phone and listened. I am here to tell you that Jasen (with an E) is a great storyteller and that I plan to air it on the podcast this week. However, to whet your appetites here is an excerpt from his story in Jasen’s own words:

Arizona LightningI was driving between stations when I saw a flash of light. It was lightning, actual bolts spraying out from alone, isolated storm. I had never seen lightning like that before. I stared in awe. It looked like jewelry, some kind of tiara, on a mountain. I never knew that 4:00 am could be so beautiful. I never knew it could be so terrifying!” – Jasen from Carefree, Arizona (A real place – I checked).

Note: The picture comes from Jasen’s own camera and was taken that night. If you want to hear the whole story tune into the podcast this week!

Old Time Horror with Jim Harold

When I first got into podcasting I brought Jim Harold on the show to talk about old time radio. I did not know at the time that he was a big of a fan of it as I was. This lead to a seven-year-old tradition called, Old Time Horror, and I have to say that I hope it goes on forever. Jim and I both are old souls living at the wrong time. I honestly believe that had we been around in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s we both would have been in the radio business.

So, with that said you will find below the entire Old Time Horror collection starting with 2011 onto the most current one which aired in 2017. I hope you enjoy this blog and return to it often because these are among my favorite shows that I have done.

Thank You, Jim!

-Ron

BTW: Jim has appeared on many other shows through the years on Ron’s Amazing Stories. You can find those by going to the main website and searching for Jim Harold.
