Where To Get OTR

Old Time Radio LogoOver the years I have received a number of requests to share where I get my old time radio shows.  I recently was asked by Jarrod Nichelous to relist where The Shadow can be found. When I first started the podcast every episode had an OTR story. Today with all of your stories coming in and the new segments, I don’t play them as often. But I still listen to OTR a lot.

But where is the treasure?  All you have to do is go to the Internet Archive and a whole century of classics is at your fingers. Everything that I have ever used on Ron’s Amazing Stories can be found there. This includes a whole more than just stories. The archive also contains most of the News Reports that you have heard from time to time.

Here are some links to a few of my favorites:

GunSmoke – Classic Western Starring William Conrad.
Dimension X – Classic Science Fiction Stories.
Suspense – Probably the very best of all OTR series.
Richard Diamond – The Private Detective series by Blake Edwards.
The Shadow – America’s most popular hero ever!

I hope you find this useful. There is one more link that I will share. It is the Top Menu of all of the OTR shows available on the Internet Archive.

Enjoy,
-Ron

The Truth About Fiction

Mark Twain QuoteWhat is the writer’s accountability to the truth? The very word fiction implies untruth. Do you remember as a child when you heard a story that scared you? Your parents probably told you not to worry because it was just a story. However, for some of them to work you must suspend your disbelief.

I have always believed that every story ever told has some truth in it. We learn by experience and then that experience applies to our stories. So, by default, they do have real components. Mark Twain is noted for saying, “Write what you know.” He wasn’t just talking about knowledge. He meant to write about something that we have experienced on an emotional level and then come out the other side. We have learned a lesson, and have been transformed by its experience.

Yes, this concept is a little out there, but if you think about it, it is right on the money. So,  even though the tale didn’t really happen it is still partly true.

A Thank You Note!

RAS Thank YouI thought that I would take a moment to thank you all for sharing your stories with the show. It is such a pleasure each day to open my mailbox and see what you have sent me. Of course, I don’t get new stories every day, but it’s not too far off that mark. That you want to support the podcast means the world to me and I truly do appreciate it.

I do get emails asking why it takes so long for some of your stories to air. I try to group them together in a theme if I can, and unfortunately, some of the stories are not appropriate for young people. I have been asked to start a podcast for the harder tales and call it Ron’s Naughty Stories. I may do that someday!

Sincerely,

-Ron

Five Minute Question

Five Minute MysteryI received this email by Todd White from Oakland, California.

Hello Ron, I love the podcast and your highly different format. There is no one out there doing what you do. Keep doing it. I do have a question about the Five Minute Mysteries. Not that I am getting tired of them and they are kind of your podcast signature but are you ever going to drop them?  Todd from Oakland

Well, Todd, I think you right on about the Five Minute Mysteries being a RAS signature. I really don’t foresee dropping them, but I do have the idea of doing original versions employing the listeners to help me do it. Folks like Mark Nelson, David Larson, and just recently Cody (Mustache) Apedaile have all expressed interested in doing just that. I am a big fan of the short-story concept with an OTR element thrown in. Doing a full-scale radio show is a lofty goal, but I think the five-minute model seems doable.

Last October I created brand new versions of The Five Minute Mysteries using the backbone of the original programming, and the response was pretty good. I hope to do more of that in the future. I have said this before and say it again now. If anyone wants to write an original Five Minute Mystery Script I would love to read it. You can find examples of the scripts on the website, The OTR script library. They have over 177 vintage radio series online. You can find those scripts here!

Mommy, What Is Twitter?

Mommy, What is Twitter?I received this email this week:

Hey Ron, love the podcast and my favorite segments are A Moment in Time and the OTR commercials.  I can’t get enough history and both of those really hit home reminding us what life was like before social media swallowed us whole. People could react to what was happening in their own homes but really had to think about what they would do or say about it. Letters to the editor had to be well thought out and concise in order to get into print, but your voice was heard. Here is to simpler times and to you for reminding us of our past. – Brian Kano from Austin, Texas

I love how you think Brian. You hit the nail on the head as to why I play the old stuff. We are good people, but we have become lost in how we communicate with each other. I wonder what our president’s approval rate would have been in the 1940s. Twitter did not exist back and then, and the Russians were one of our allies. Just a random thought from your friendly podcaster.

Thank you for your great comment, Brian, I do appreciate it.
