Where Do They Come From?

One of the most often asked questions I get is, “Where do I get my old time radio shows?” I have answered this on the show a couple of times, but have never formally addressed the question. Today I am going to do that:

I first became interested in the golden age of radio in the early 1980s. However, even before that I was listening to CBS Radio Mystery Theater which aired on the radio from 1974 to 1982. In the 80s to get the shows you had to know a guy. All of that changed with the propagation of the internet. Telnet became a thing and there were newsgroups dedicated to the hobby. People would share their collections. You had to have some special archival software to unlock them and to download a single episode could take several hours (even though the files are only a few kilobytes). As the internet grew so did the hobby and I bought my first full collection of Gunsmoke on Ebay in 1996 on 5 CDs. I loved this and at the time I had one heck of a commute to work. These stories were my entertainment.

The next big change also came in 1996. The Internet Archive was born. They began archiving the Internet itself. Like newspapers, the content published on the web was temporary – but unlike newspapers, no one was saving it. Today they have 25+ years of web history accessible through the Wayback Machine. But that was not the end of it. They also began to allow collections to be stored on their servers. This included everything from famous art to radio recordings. It was from here that getting OTR shows became as simple as a couple of mouse clicks.

Here is a quote from their about page: https://archive.org/about/

The Internet Archive serves millions of people each day and is one of the top 300 websites in the world. A single copy of the Internet Archive library collection occupies 99+ Petabytes of server space (and we store at least 2 copies of everything). We are funded through donations, grants, and by providing web archiving and book digitization services for our partners.

So, now you know where I get all of the programs you hear on the show. Everything OTR is there and all you have to know is the name. Just open the Google machine and type the name of the show followed by the word archive and the world of OTR is open to you. (example: “ron’s amazing stories archive” will get you the first 100 episodes of my podcast.)

Here are some example OTR links on The Internet Archive:

Gunsmoke – A 1950’s western drama.
X-Minus One – A 1950’s science fiction drama
The Mysterious Traveler – A 1950’s horror anthology series.

RAS #593 – Dogs And Werewolves

On Ron’s Amazing Stories the theme is the canine. We will begin the show with a review of the audiobook Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses by Kristen O’Neal. Then we tell Jeremy’s strange story that takes place in the deserts of New Mexico. Our featured story comes from the Canadian Mounted Police, and we end the show with a brand new Johnny Is It True – Werewolf Edition. So press that play button and enjoy the show.

Featured Story – The Pack-Rat Nest

Challenge Of The Yukon

Our featured story for this week is all about a dog. It comes from the classic OTR series Challenge Of The Yukon. Sergeant William Preston of the Northwest Mounted Police and his lead sled dog, Yukon King, fight evildoers in the Northern wilderness during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. These stories are well told and the quality of the sound is phenomenal. Our tale is titled The Pack-Rat Nest and might just be the most complete crime story I have heard from old time radio. It first aired on May 13, 1952.

Other Stories Include – Murder At The Mountain Lodge, Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses, The Howl In The Desert, The Pack-Rat Nest, and Johnny Is It True – Werewolf Edition

It Howled Like A Dingo

The theme for Ron’s Amazing Stories this Thursday is dogs, wolves, and werewolves. Our featured story comes from Challenge Of The Yukon starring that amazing husky, King! We have a listener story from New Mexico where Jeremy encounters what can only be called a Skinwalker, and even our audiobook review is titled Lycanthropy And Other Chronic Illnesses. So I thought I would dig into the archives and share this story from Lydia Hansen all the way from Sydney Australia.  Lydia writes:

Hello Ron. Greetings from Sydney. I love your show and tell everyone about it. You are fantastic to listen to and I never miss it. I don’t have a whopper of a story for you, but it did happen.

Australian Dingo

I was twelve years old. My dad is a rancher and we lived out on Anna Creek most of my life. One morning, my dad asked me to get up early to take up sentry duties from my brother. We were having troubles with a pack of dingos in the region. They were stealing chicks and other small animals from locals. I relieved my brother and took up the watch. I had a pistol so that I could scare them off and alert my dad. It was still night. I saw a dark humanoid shape coming towards me. I thought it was my dad so I called out to it. The thing stopped and seemed to be looking in my direction, but I couldn’t see any features let alone eyes. I shined a flashlight at it. It disappeared from view as soon as the light hit it, but when I moved the beam away it would return to view. This went on for a few minutes or so, and then it howled like a dingo. I fired my pistol in the air and it vanished. A few minutes later my dad arrived and I told him what I saw. He said that he had seen the very same thing earlier that night. We never found it or saw it again. – Lydia Hansen, Sydney Australia

Amazing Story Lydia and thank you for sharing it with us. I did a little research and I didn’t have any reference to anything like it. How very strange and scary. I did learn that Aboriginal people have maintained and developed a rich folklore centered on spirits and ghosts. Perhaps those archives may help you learn more. I could not gain access to them. Again thank you for your story.

RAS 592 – Stairway To Heaven

Thunderstorms were the word of the day. We had a day full of them and it disrupted my plans for the show, but in the end my loss is your gain. The strikes caused a power disruption which temporarily shutdown my systems. In the end I decided it was better to leave them off and come up with a new plan for the show. I have been wanting to run today’s story for quite a while. The problem is that we have 60 minutes and the story was a bit longer than that. However, with some creative editing you will hear an amazing story! It is my hope that you enjoy this special edition of Ron’s Amazing Stories.

Featured Story – Stairway To Heaven

Our featured story is a radio adaptation of a 1946 film titled A Matter of Life and Death (AKA, Stairway To Heaven). I know what you are thinking. Was this the inspiration of the famous rock tune by Led Zeppelin? In a nutshell, no. WWII British Air Force pilot Peter Carter is on his way home from a bombing mission in a badly damaged aircraft. Before he bails out of the plane, into the ocean, he contacts June who is an Allied radio operator. With her, he shares what he believes to be his final moments on Earth. It is titled Stairway To Heaven and it first aired on The Screen Directors Playhouse on July 26, 1951.

Program note: If you want to watch the 1946 film version of Stairway To Heaven you can find it here on YouTube with advertisements.

They’ll Send You Home and I Will Bury You!

There have been a few stories on the show over the years that have shook me to the core. Life is what we decide to make it. We can choose to say, “Woe is me!”, or we can decide to live each day to see what happens. Lately, I have been doing the whole “woe” thing. Then I came across this story sent in years ago by Ray Peyton from Lafayette, Louisiana. It woke me up a bit and today I am going to try the other side. Thank you Ray!

Ron

Ray Peyton

I just have to share this story. In 2008 I was home from Iraq on emergency Leave. My father had just been diagnosed with lung cancer. I only had ten days with him. On the last day, when I was scheduled to depart Lafayette, and head back overseas – I didn’t want to go. I figured it may be the last time I ever saw Dad alive. So I was at his house, waiting on my ride to the airport, talking to my father, trying to make up any excuse to stay, and finally he said, “You have to go”.

So I asked him, “Well Dad, what if I’m over there and you die?” He just looked at me and said nothing. So then I asked, “Well, what if I’m over there and I get killed?”

Without any hesitation on his part whatsoever, sternly, and forcibly he replied, “They’ll send you home and I will bury you!”

I will never forget that. Now that is being Frank! That is Life.

I got in the car waiting outside and left.

Ray Peyton
