Five Minute Question

I received this email by Todd White from Oakland, California.

Hello Ron, I love the podcast and your highly different format. There is no one out there doing what you do. Keep doing it. I do have a question about the Five Minute Mysteries. Not that I am getting tired of them and they are kind of your podcast signature but are you ever going to drop them? Todd from Oakland

Well, Todd, I think you right on about the Five Minute Mysteries being a RAS signature. I really don’t foresee dropping them, but I do have the idea of doing original versions employing the listeners to help me do it. Folks like Mark Nelson, David Larson, and just recently Cody (Mustache) Apedaile have all expressed interested in doing just that. I am a big fan of the short-story concept with an OTR element thrown in. Doing a full-scale radio show is a lofty goal, but I think the five-minute model seems doable.

Last October I created brand new versions of The Five Minute Mysteries using the backbone of the original programming, and the response was pretty good. I hope to do more of that in the future. I have said this before and say it again now. If anyone wants to write an original Five Minute Mystery Script I would love to read it. You can find examples of the scripts on the website, The OTR script library. They have over 177 vintage radio series online. You can find those scripts here!

RAS #379 – The Planet Zevious

Featured Story – The Planet Zevious

When I am searching for stories to share I sometimes find things that I have never heard before. That is the case with planet Zevious. While the story may not seem all that original try to remember that it was recorded over seventy years ago. It tells of a first venture into space, but from a different perspective. It is titled The Planet Zevious and comes from one of my favorite OTR series The Mysterious Traveler. It first aired the Mutual Broadcast System on August 2, 1948.

The News – May 2019

No big headlines this month. I did want to report out on the progress of the UFO podcast. I have given up on snagging a top-shelf UFOlogist for the show. I am moving on to plan B. If that fails I will host the show with Jason Dowd or possibly another well-known podcaster. I will keep you posted. I do have all of the UFO stories I need from you guys. My thanks to everyone that sent one in. Believe it or not, UFO stories are the hardest to come by and we had six of them. Very nice. Since I only needed four for the show, I will read one these in this week’s podcast.

I am still waiting to hear about if or when Ron’s Amazing Stories will be available on Pandora’s podcast service. We are still be adding to most new podcast catchers and the list now is no longer something I can manage. I do track fourteen of the top podcast players out there to make sure all is well. So far no issues.

There have been some fluctuations in the internet numbers. The month of April was up about 7%, but so far the month of May is down about 4%. I have learned you can’t really know how things are until the month is complete, so I am not worried about May. On the radio side, I have not heard of any changes, so I assume that means they are consistent. I am not sure often they even get rating updates.

RAS #378 – To Haiti and Back

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this week Jason Dowd and Ron get aboard the Horror Express for a mini-episode. Jason has an update on a story he told us at Christmas time. Angela from Texas tells us two creepy tales from Haiti that were passed down from her father’s, father’s father!. We also have a classic Science Fiction short story called Spoken for, and a Five Minute Mystery called Fisherman’s Clue.

Featured Story – Spoken For

We have an odd little story today. It comes from the July 1955 issue of Galaxy Magazine. It tells a dramatic story of a man who finds himself lost on the moon Ganymede. He is looking for his family and finds a young woman who tries to help. She, in turn, falls in love with him while they unravel his tale. It is titled Spoken For and it was written by William Morrison.

Mommy, What Is Twitter?

I received this email this week:

Hey Ron, love the podcast and my favorite segments are A Moment in Time and the OTR commercials. I can’t get enough history and both of those really hit home reminding us what life was like before social media swallowed us whole. People could react to what was happening in their own homes but really had to think about what they would do or say about it. Letters to the editor had to be well thought out and concise in order to get into print, but your voice was heard. Here is to simpler times and to you for reminding us of our past. – Brian Kano from Austin, Texas

I love how you think Brian. You hit the nail on the head as to why I play the old stuff. We are good people, but we have become lost in how we communicate with each other. I wonder what our president’s approval rate would have been in the 1940s. Twitter did not exist back and then, and the Russians were one of our allies. Just a random thought from your friendly podcaster.
