A True Campfire Story

We have a story sent in by Roger Mathews of Hollywood. Roger is a singer, songwriter and actor who wants us all to know that he does not drink, do drugs or is crazy. He believes that after you hear his story you will wonder. In his own words here is his story.

I am a struggling actor and that means you can’t be choosy about the jobs you take in order to survive. A friend of mine told me about an acting company that does summer tours performing at camp grounds all through Nevada and Utah. They set up and do weekend shows and then move on to the next. I joined them late in the tour as a replacement for a guy who broke his leg. His show would not go on and I would be the new Jimmy in a scary campfire story called, The Ghost Of Swamp Park.

A True Campfire Story

After our last show of the weekend we have the tradition of inviting all of the campers to a s’more and taco feast at the bonfire. We would chat with the guests, sing songs and tell more stories. It is always the hit of the weekend. I played my guitar and sang and if I am honest it was my favorite part of each week.

After each bonfire night one of us had to stay behind to tend the fire until it no longer was a threat. Sometimes we had company, but most of the time it was just one person. We drew lots to see who got the chore. It was more of a betting game than anything and was great fun, until you lost. One of our group members never got the chore all season. I ended up with it three times.

It was on that third time the perfect storm hit. The bonfire had been held in an open field and was not very close to the campground. It was a dark clear night – no moon and I was not only alone, but I felt lonely!  I started out my vigil by calming the fire down as much as possible. Then I settled in with my comfy fold up chair, started my iPod and waited.

After about 30 minutes my iPod went silent. I was sure I had charged it, but it was dead. The fire was still way too hot to leave, but I decided to start shoveling dirt on it away. I hoped to speed things up. It was then I heard the voice say, “It’s too early for that. You dimwit!”

“Huh!”, I said with all the intelligence and grace of a baboon. (Not to give Baboons a bad name mind you). I looked around and there was no one there. The voice had sounded right next to me, but I was still alone.

Out of the darkness it came again, “The fire, idiot, you can’t cover it up yet it’s too big!”

Someone slipped me something, I thought. I am hallucinating …badly!

“You are not hallucinating. Can’t you see me?” It replied.

“Um, no I am looking and not seeing a thing. Are you dead?” I immediately regretted saying that. Too many ghost stories I told myself … way too many and sat down in my cozy chair again.

“I loved your songs and I aint sure if I am dead”, he replied.

I tried to cover my ears, but I still heard him just fine.

He continued “You are a good singer and you made a lot of folks very happy.”

“Thank-you, I guess”. I jumped up. “Who is this? Who is out there?” I yelled and began to run around looking for wires, speakers, people, heck I was even looking for a ghost. I found nothing.

He spoke again, “Name’s Pete, I am looking for gold around these parts. I’ll not be telling you where, so don’t ask.”

“I wouldn’t think of it, ” I stated flatly. This is crazy, I thought. I have lost it and now I am in real trouble.

“You’re not crazy and I’m not gonna hurt you. Unless you go fer my gold. I would get upset bout that.”

“I wouldn’t think of it. Where are you? I asked.

“Right here, darn yah!”

As his voice trailed off I saw a faint outline of a man against the starry backdrop. He was bent over and old. He looked like he had done hard labor his whole life.

“I am called Rodger”, I said, still staring at him.

No reply came and the form shifted to mist and floated away. I fell back into my chair and just sat for some time. To me it was very real and the more I go over it the more I believe I was visited by Pete’s ghost. – Roger Mathews

Old Man Jimmy

Our story comes from Dayne Wattley of Santa Fe, New Mexico. For those of you that listen to the podcast a lot know that we get a lot of strange tales from the state whose motto is Crescit Eundo. Translated from Latin, it means “It grows as it goes”. It appears that its oddness is not limited to fantastic stories.

Dayne writes:

Old Man Jimmy

I hear you like strange stories from NM. Here is my entry. I was driving from Santa Fe to Las Vegas. Now, before you think this a long story I am talking about Las Vegas, NM (Population 14,565 and not a slot machine in site). However, there are a lot of lonely roads to the city.  I was about a half an hour out when I saw on the side of the road an old car broke down. There beside it was an even older man with this thumb out. I stopped and asked if he need help, to which he said he said, “Oh My Yes”

He hopped in the car and said he needed to get to Las Vegas. We drove and right off the bat I thought this guy was strange. He was talking like he was from another era. He said his name was Jimmy, and he talked a lot about Roswell. What made it strange was the way he was talking, you would think it all just happened. I ignored it and in truth it was nice to have someone to chat with. Just before we got to town he said that this was fine and that I could drop him here. I pulled over at diner and he hopped out, waved and said goodbye.

I started to drive away and happened to look back. He was gone! I mean gone-gone. There is no way he could have made it to the diner and there was nothing else there. I went back to look, nothing and I even checked a nearby run off trench. He had disappeared.

I know it was crazy but I had to do it. I drove back to where I had picked the guy up and the car was gone. Nothing was there. I drove back to the diner and went inside. I must have had a certain look, because the waitress asked, “is everything okay honey?”

I told her my story and after a bit of silence and a giggle or two she told me that I had just met Jimmy.  Funny thing was I had not told her his name. – Dayne Wattley

The Old Man And The Keg

This story comes from somewhere in the UK and was sent in by Sebastian. That’s all I really know about it. I have given this story the title The Old Man And The Keg

Greetings Ron’s Amazing Stories. I have a tale for you and your listeners that I want to share. I hope that you find it as amazing as the many stories you share with us. Back in 1997 my wife and I were working as relief management for a brewery. We would live and work in whichever pub we were sent to, usually covering holidays or filling gaps between tenants.

The Old Man And The Keg

Whilst staying in one pub, my wife and I noticed odd things happening. We would walk into a room and I would feel that something had moved or odd noises. We both laughed this off at first. Then beer taps would stop working. I would assume the keg was empty and I would head to the cellar to change the keg, only to find it full and that the gas had been shut off.  Also, things like the keg mallets would vanish or the cap keys would go missing –  only to find them somewhere else later on.

One night, after closing the pub, my wife was in the bar and I went upstairs. I had heard footsteps, and was thinking a customer was still in the pub and was in our private quarters. I unlocked the door and saw a man in brown trousers, with a cream striped shirt. He had his sleeves rolled up and he looked like he was carrying something up the stairs.

I shouted at him and followed. Reaching the top of the stairs I searched the rooms and there was nobody there. In fact there was nobody else in the pub. I immediately went cold and then felt fear burn through my body like a surge. Thinking about it now I can picture the scene perfectly and it still makes me feel uncomfortable.

The next night I described him to a group of regular customers at the pub, more than one couple told me it was the old landlord from years ago, they even described the clothes he was wearing. They said that he lived for the place and the neighborhood. He would walk around the area watching for trouble and helping those in need.

Most people I’ve told either laugh or say I imagined it. People who believe tend to then tell me about their experiences. On the whole I don’t tell people as it makes me feel silly at times. The experience changed me from being a complete skeptic to now being open minded. I still tell myself I don’t believe in ghosts, but I also think there is a lot that we don’t understand about this world. There is no other explanation to what happened. I’ve thought about it for such a long time and came to the conclusion that I saw a ghost. – Sebastian

I think you saw one too, Sebastian. It is a pretty cut and dried story. Also, you do have the bulk of the neighbors confirming it. I want to thank you for sharing it with us!  And for the record it is amazing!

The Man With Yellow Eyes

On the blog this time we have a very strange story from New Mexico. The fact that we have a strange story from there is not the odd part. Over the years of the show I can honestly say that we have more tales from The Land Of Enchantment than from anywhere. No, what makes this story strange is that I have never heard one like it before. It comes from Mike and that is all I know about him.

The Man With Yellow Eyes

Hey Ron, my name is Mike and I am originally from Texas, but live in New Mexico ATM.  In NM one thing you can do is drive. The endless desert is nothing short of amazing and I find peace just going out there to lose myself. It is relaxing. That is until it isn’t.

One night I was driving home from a day wine tasting. Many folk don’t know that New Mexico has some really fine vineyards and it can be a wonderful day trip. I was sober, clean and safe. However, my car may have had one too many and broke down.

I pulled over to the side of the road and realized that my phone was missing. This was going to be a long wait. I put out flares, donned an orange vest and thought about breaking out some of the cheese and crackers I bought. Out of nowhere a man came up to the car and started walking around it. He seemed particularly interested in the  flares.

I got out of the car and started to tell him my problems. He totally ignored me and kept looking at those darn flares. I started in again and again he ignored me. Finally I shouted hey you deaf. It was then he looked up at me and I saw he had no face. Where his eyes were two yellow dots.

I took a step back and tripped on something. When I got up the man or whatever it was, was gone.  About an hour later a patrol car rolled up and I got help. I decided not to tell the policeman my story. What do you think I saw? – Mike

Honestly Mike, I have no idea. Do know this. If it had happened to me I doubt I would have handled it as well as you sound like you did. I did find an obscure reference to a serial killer with yellow eyes in the Albuquerque area.

Invisible Residents

Our story comes from Melissa in Carmel Valley. It happened to her while attending California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly for short). She writes:

California Polytechnic State University

Love the podcast. It was in the  summer of 1997, and I was living with roommates in a house that had some “invisible residents.” We had been dealing with the typical poltergeist action, which after about the fourth time became annoying. Nobody would get hurt, but books would fall off the shelf by themselves, and one day after hearing a pretty loud crash in the kitchen, we discovered broken plates littering the floor. It always happened when no one was looking, which was more irritating.

Once after a particularly lively day I was getting ready to head out to the campus for my weekly radio show at the student-run station. Before leaving, I decided to verbally confront the entity out loud. In my room, I asked it to make itself known in front of us. As if on cue, a 45 record which was sitting on top of my stereo across the room came sailing out to me just like a frisbee being tossed. It hit my shins and fell to the floor.

Now… I wasn’t scared. I was satisfied that it had finally gained enough courage to show off something in person. I thanked the ghost and continued on my way to the radio station.  The odd thing was we never heard from it again.

I still can’t believe that it happened, but it did. I remember telling my dad about it shortly afterwards and he said, “Have you ever heard of telekinesis?” I took this to mean that he believed I saw what I did but even he couldn’t wrap his brain around it and was looking for a more scientific approach… Anyway thanks Ron!  – Melissa

This Week’s Podcast:

On the podcast this week we have a classic science fiction story from the pages of Galaxy Magazine. Do you know what jaywalking is? Basically it is walking or going to a place where you’re not supposed to be. In the world of science fiction that probably is a pretty bad idea. Tune in this week and find out!
