The Haunted Painting

This one presents two sides of a story. We all see things differently and that is what makes life …interesting. It comes from Alex Hannibal from Aurora, Colorado. Alex is currently a postal worker and served two tours as a marine in Afghanistan. Thank you for your service! Alex has titled this one The Haunted Painting.

Hey Ron! When I was a kid I used to live in a haunted house (confirmed by my mom, family and some family friends) so today I have a story to tell. (Sorry if my writing is not the best, I had a hard time thinking about this) First, I’m gonna tell my side of the story. I’m sorry if the details are a bit fuzzy but I don’t remember much. I was only like 3 or 4 years old.

Circa 1994 I lived in a house with my mom, I don’t have any brothers or sisters and I always wanted one to play with because I felt lonely sometimes. I remember that some days I used to play in between a wall and the door of my bedroom with a little girl (You know when you open a door slightly and an angle is formed between the door and the wall). I always thought that she was my imaginary friend because I would often hear about them in movies and TV shows. I remember my mom asking about my imaginary friend and I told her that she had her face covered in some sort of mud or dirt and that I could only see her eyes. I told my mom that she was in a car accident and that’s why her face was like that. I still remember that face so vividly to this day (I’m 32 at the moment).

I remember my mom used to have people with her in our house and they would often stay in the living room talking about stuff. My mom always told me to stay in her bedroom until they were gone.

Some strange things that happened at that time. My mom often would visit the grave of a friend of hers that had recently passed away and she would cry a lot saying things like “take me with you, I can’t do this anymore” and stuff like that. I never thought about it because I was so little and I didn’t understand what was going on.

Fast forward a few of years (2004/2005) my mom was getting married and the photographer was a friend of hers (I’m going to call her Laura), so before the photo session we went to Laura’s house and they start talking about random stuff and then something pops out to me: Laura asked my mom if our house was still haunted. Something clicked and I started asking questions to both my mom and Laura.

Laura told me that one time she went to our house but there was nobody there and she wrote something on a post-it note and stuck it on our front door. When she was doing so she saw the curtains move as if someone had stuck its head out to look outside. She found that quite strange and asked my mom about it. My mom told her the story about what was going on. I started questioning my mom about it and she finally told me the whole story. Here is what she told me.

Apparently in 1994 my mom worked in the same place as a neighbor (a girl about the same age as my mom. I’m gonna call her Abigail). They became close friends. Abigail’s mom used to sell paintings and my mom asked to buy one that had a couple of angels and a bible verse. It’s worth mentioning that I don’t remember this painting at all. Right after this Abigail and her 5 year old daughter were killed in a car accident.

When my mom got the painting hung up strange stuff started happening in our home. She would often see an apparition of a woman and a little girl. The woman was always in a bad mood and sometimes our house would start to freeze in some rooms. Where we lived at the time had an average temperature of around 104 °F in summer. Also things would break and stuff would fall off the shelfs.

So my mom started looking for help and called a church group to pray in our home (the group of “friends” that I mentioned earlier). There wasn’t any improvement in the situation so she and my grandma went to see some sort of medium. My mom told her about what was happening in our house at the time, and that she would often visit her friend’s grave and cry for help. The medium told my mom that when she went to visit her friend’s grave she wasn’t talking to her friend. She was speaking to something or someone else. The medium wanted to go to our house and see for herself.

When she got there she told my mom that the house had several spirits and that they came from something inside our home. She asked if my mom was given a present or if she bought something new when everything started to happen. My mom told her about the painting. The medium told her to burn the painting because it could be what was causing everything. So, my mom called her brother and they tried to burn it but it wouldn’t catch fire. She went back to the medium some days later and with her help they were able to destroy it. After that everything went back to normal. We moved to a new city and started using that house as storage.

One day I went back to visit my grandparents who still lived in the area, but there was a wild thunderstorm that cut the electricity for the entire block. PUD told us that it would be at least a week before the power would get back on. So we had the idea to go to our old home and stay there until power was restored. We went to the house and tried to unlock the front door with no success. I tried unlocking the back door and that didn’t work either. So I broke in. When I did that there was a scream inside the house that rang out like thunder. I ran in and searched the house. We found nothing. Needless to say we went and got a hotel room and my grandparents would never go back to the house again. A few months later I cleaned the place out and sold it.

Alex Hannibal – Aurora, Colorado

Alex, that is one heck of a good story. So much collaborating stuff. I have no doubt that the little girl in the car accident is your invisible friend. And perhaps that painting was nothing more than a painting. Thank you for sharing this with us. Truly amazing!

A Walk On The Beach

A lot of the stories we get here, in fact maybe all of them, people are surprised by what happens to them. How they react becomes a learning experience. Ray Bradbury had this to say about that, Living at risk is jumping off the cliff and building your wings on the way down. So many times how we treat a situation is as important as the problem itself. Like this story sent in by Leo Benson from Los Angeles.

A Walk On The Beacg

Hello Ron, Thank you for your show and the chance to share my strange story. I was walking on the beach a few years ago. It was pretty late at night and I was alone. Not the first time I have done this and surely won’t be last, but next time I will be a bit better prepared.

The Seas were fairly rough that night so I made sure I stayed away from the water. I was minding my own business when I heard this strange scream. As you know, sound on the beach can be a funny thing so at first I didn’t know which way to turn. So, I closed my eyes and figured out where to go. What I found was unreal. I saw a log with a net attached to it. Flapping violently was a fin. I ran over expecting to find a sea lion or some other fish trapped. What I found was quite different. It was a human, sort of, but more fish than anything. The face was smooth, but featureless. Tears, at least I think they were tears, were streaming down its face. I could feel that it was in pain and very scared. I tried to remove the netting, but it was too thick. Then I remembered that I had seen a bottle a while back and I ran back to get it. I broke it on the log and cut the creature free. Instantly it rolled away back into the water and was gone.

I just stood there for a very long time not sure I believed what just happened. I wish there was more to this story, but that’s it. Since that time I always carry a pocket knife. Just in case. – Leo Benson

Okay, that is the strangest tale I have ever heard. In folklore, mermaids were often associated with misfortune and death, luring errant sailors off course and even onto rocky shoals. I think your story adds some credibility to that fact that they just might be real. However, in this case you were not doomed to misfortune and I think you just may have a friend in the sea. Thank you for sharing!

This Week’s Podcast:

Well it has finally happened. For the first time in my life I got laryngitis. I am not sure how that is going to impact the podcast so we shall see. My Night Job Is Haunted

Our story comes from Carlton Jacobs who writes to us from somewhere in California. He has titled this My Night Job Is Haunted!

My Night Job Is Haunted

I work as a night janitor for several small businesses in my city. One of my main locations, which I clean daily, is an animal hospital. There is a kennel where sometimes there are hospitalized patients overnight. There is a grief room for families to spend their last moments with their pets, and they also have a cremation machine for animals that have died. I often see their ashes in a tray in that room. I have always gotten a strange energy from those two rooms that I don’t feel anywhere else in the hospital. not a bad energy, just melancholy, and the hints of spirit activity.

A few months ago I started experiencing the feeling that I’m being followed or watched. I’ll look around and do a quick walk through the hospital to make sure, but find nothing. Since this started I’ve become more aware of my surroundings and keeping my eye out, and sure enough, I see shadows of animals moving out of the corner of my eye. I’ll see a flash of an orange cat’s tail, or a slinky looking cat creeping against the wall. I wear earbuds at work, but I’ll still hear barking. When I take them out… nothing. The first thing I do every day is check to see if there are any hospitalized patients and yes I have heard barking even if there are no overnight guests. The most common place I see shadows is the grief room, and the most common place I hear animal sounds is the kennel. No bad energy at all, I just think there are some lost pets who are looking for their families.  – Carlton Jacobs

Well Carlton, that does sound creepy. Have you ever thought about capturing some evidence of your experiences? I for one would love to hear anything that you pick up. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Ron

Grandma’s Tricks

This week’s story ran on the show a few months ago on episode #509. It comes from Sonia Norman who sent this from Pennsylvania. I like this one because I have never heard of a protective grandmother who just happens to be a ghost. Sonia has titled her story Grandma’s Tricks.

So, before anything, I’m going to confirm that we do have at least one ghost in our house. It’s a woman, and several neighbors have confirmed seeing her. She’s the grandma of my mom’s boyfriend and he’s claimed to have felt her as well. Me and my mom have also seen a shadow go from a room to the bathroom and vice versa. With that out of the way, let’s begin.

It was around 12 AM, and I had just finished taking a shower. Everyone’s asleep. My family, the neighbors, everyone. My neighborhood sleeps like a log. I enter my room, which happens to be in the basement, and head towards my bed.  Then I hear a woman’s laugh. It felt as if she was in front of me, and sitting on my bed. I thought to myself okay, no biggie. Maybe she’s amused at something; I know she’s not inherently harmful. Just overprotective over mom’s boyfriend. So I turned on the bedroom lights and laid down, trying to sleep and act like it didn’t happen.

Unfortunately an hour passes and I haven’t fallen asleep. Mom’s boyfriend wakes up and turns on the TV upstairs. I go up and start talking to him about the laugh. He tells me to ignore it and it should be over. We start talking about other experiences we have both had. There was a flicker of a light on the balcony… that light has been dead for years. It never turns on. I point it out, but we keep talking about past experiences. The light flickers again, and this time I’m a bit more scared, but he laughs it off saying grandma is just trying to get your goat and on cue the light flickered a third time.  After a bit I decided to go back to my room.

My body had chills all over, and all I could feel was fear and dread. There was nothing else, just sleepiness and fear. Thirty minutes passed and the chills still hadn’t left my body. I looked around the room knowing that I was not alone. Then in the corner a flame starts to flicker. It forms into the shape of a woman and she starts wagging her finger at me.  I am twenty-three years old and tore out of that room and ran to my mom’s bedroom. I jumped into bed with her and never left her side for the rest of the night. Now, you might ask where the boyfriend slept? Quite honestly I didn’t care. – Sonia Norman

The Halloween Ghost

Our story is from Valerie Alexis Barnes who lives near Canterbury somewhere in the United Kingdom. She has titled her story The Halloween Ghost. The British have long celebrated Guy Fawkes Day on November 5, but now October 31 is a lot more appealing. In England, Halloween is hot right now. Houses and shops are decorated with images of witches, pumpkins and Micheal Myers. A brief history of Halloween in the UK can be found at this link.

Valerie’s is one of those who celebrates Halloween and here is her tale:

The Halloween Ghost

It was Halloween evening and I was around 10 years old – I’m 18 now. I was standing in our living room with my friends and brothers. There were five of us all watching out the window, waiting for late arriving trick or treaters. It was dark outside, around eight in the evening, when we saw a blue glowing figure floating up the road. I remember thinking about a classic cartoon ghost, like one you would see in Mario. But a part of me also remembers an old 17th century man in nightwear. I think this is because that’s what my brother saw and it has changed my perception over the years.

Anyway, it walked/ floated up the road for about ten meters and then vanished behind a street light. We were all baffled. The weird thing is that I can’t remember anything before or after. Just when we saw it. I’ve tried to ask the others there what they remember and they too can only recall the single event. My twin brother and I still remember it clearly and it shakes us up every time we speak about it. This is the only paranormal experience I’ve ever had in my life, but it has made me believe in it all. – Valerie Alexis Barnes

That is an odd tale and with so many witnesses it is impossible to refute. Was it a ghost or just a blue glowing man in a nightshirt? I am going with the ghost idea.
