Happy Thanksgiving – 2019

Happy Thanksgiving!Hello!

First, let me say Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family from Ron’s Amazing Stories. Did you know that President Thomas Jefferson thought making Thanksgiving a National Holiday was “a ridiculous proposition.” It’s True! Meanwhile, Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird and it was even rumored that he nicknamed the turkey “Tom” to spite Thomas.

On the podcast this week I am taking a break from doing a full show. But not to worry it is going to be a good one! We have a classic science fiction story written by Isaac Asimov called Nightfall. It is one of my favorites by him and I think you are going to love it. Also, I found a real Thanksgiving story from the adventure series Challenge of the Yukon staring that amazing husky King!

Happy Thanksgiving!

-Ron

How To Find Sound Fx?

I received this email from Zachary Byrd who writes to us from the great state of Illinois.

I am a long-time listener to the program and just wanted to write to thank you for being here for me. Your show is always fun, always entertaining and …well, always there.  If I had to change anything it would be to have more stories. My question is about sound effects. I am dabbling in sound editing and want to make my own short stories. But I can’t find any sound effects that aren’t copyrighted or require purchase. Can you help me with this?  – Zach

Zach, I have been there and done that. You are correct that there are a lot of folks out there who supply effects, but you don’t have to pay for them. There are many available on youtube, but the problem is that you have to convert those from video to audio for use. Not difficult, but it is time-consuming. My go-to place for sound effects is either to create them myself or head to FreeSound.org. FreeSound.org

For example A few weeks ago it did a skit with Jim Harold. I needed the ambient sound of being picked up by a car and driving. I was not able to find exactly what I was looking for so I created my own. What I did was record it using an external mic, my iPad, and a trip in my Subaru. It worked out pretty good too.

Freesound.org is a group of folks that provides a collaborative database of audio snippets, samples, recordings, bleeps …whatever and releases them under Creative Commons licenses that allow their reuse. You only have to give the creator credit if you plan to use it for commercial use.

I hope that helps you, Zach.

The Coffers Are Bare

Ron's Amazing CoffersIf you listened to the podcast last week you know that we used a lot of stories for The Month Of Spooky 2019.  So many in fact that the coffers are bare, and I need your help to refill them. But, what is a coffer? It is a box or chest, especially one for valuables, a treasury, or governmental funds. In our case, I think the best definition is a treasury. After all, to me, nothing is more valuable than a well-told story.

Normally I get roughly two stories a week (Sometimes more …sometimes less).  During the month of spooky, the number stayed about the same. However, the usage rate was off the charts. Hence my plea. I need your stories to rebuild the coffers. So, if you have a story please share it with us. It can be about anything and everything. Do you have one to share?

Best Regards,
Ron
