It’s Been Hot … Really Hot!

Hello! Well if you have been watching the news and weather reports you know that we have had an incredible event here in the Northwest. Normal temperatures in this part of the world for June are in the 70’s. Also, more than likely it will be cloudy and rainy. None of that has been the case. In fact we have had record breaking heat. Two straight days of 115 degrees. With the 90’s in our foreseeable future. One more thing, most northwesternians don’t have air conditioners. I suspect that will change now.

Why am I telling this? There was no way I was going to try to work during this time and came to the decision to take some time off. So having said that, this week I have picked an episode from Aug of 2019 to update and present. It is one of my favorites and I know you are going to love it. It features your stories and nothing else. It is titled These Are Your Stories II. I look forward to returning to normal stuff next week.

RAS #497 – The Yillian Way

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this time we focus on the Diplomat in the person of Jame Reteif. Who is he? He is the main character in our featured story. A classic science fiction adventure from the pages of the pulp magazine, Worlds Of If.  Also on the show, we’ll visit the Hotel Diplomat in the Philippines and we review an audiobook titled The Short, Strange Life of Herschel Grynszpan. Truly some amazing stories.

Featured Story – The Yillian Way

Our featured story this week comes from author Keith Laumer and the pages of Worlds of If – Science Fiction January of 1962. It is the introduction of Laumer’s recurring character Jame Reteif who is a low-level diplomat. The ceremonial protocol of the “Yill” was impressive, colorful—and, in the long run, deadly! It was up to Retief to figure out how to respond to their overtures in the correct manner; all the while keeping his superiors from making a deadly mistake. The story is titled The Yillian Way.

Other Stories Include – Carnival Caper, The Short, Strange Life of Herschel Grynszpan, The Diplomat Hotel, and The Yillian Way

The Red Fairy

We have a story that is frightening! Omar Qadri is a faithful listener who has contributed to the show several times. He sends us this story as told to him by his mother. It comes from a time when she was still in the old country.

Here is her story as told by Omar:

When my mother was a young girl, she and her sister were playing a game in the neighborhood park with a group of friends. The park, mother told me, was located near an ancient temple ruin that dates back thousands of years ago during the rule of the Hindu Kush. They controlled the Northern parts of India which is now Pakistan. It was late at night and the game they were playing was called “Red Fairy”. It is similar to hide and seek. In the game all the children hide and the caller would say, “The red fairy is looking for you.”

That night my mother’s sister was the caller, “The Red fairy is looking for you!”

Suddenly, my mother heard a scream that could only have come from her older sister! All the kids scattered, out of fear, and ran to their nearby homes. My mother, of course, ran towards her sister! She caught up to her and then stopped dead in her tracks. She caught a glimpse of a woman dressed in red. The park’s dim lighting illuminated the creature’s clothing.

When they got home my mom’s sister was hysterical. She kept repeating, “I saw the red Fairy!” She was crying and my grandmother asked her what happened. Breathing wildly she said, “I was counting down with my eyes closed and was saying: the red fairy is coming. When I opened my eyes a woman shrouded in red garments was standing directly in front of me! I screamed and ran!”.

My mom said that her sister was sick for about two weeks after that and would not leave the house. From that day on they never played late in that park again. However, the story does not end there. My grandmother told them both, years later, about a young woman who was murdered in the woods near the ancient ruins. She was found wearing red garments that night. Hence the tale of the red fairy!

RAS #496 – The Black Seagull

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we have a bit of an experiment. What we are going to do is play some short stories sent in by you guys that I have been holding on to. I am calling it The Head Scratcher Segment. Also, we have a story from the Inner Sanctum titled The Black Seagull that should be quite chilling. So press that play button and enjoy the show.

Featured Story – The Black Seagull

Our featured story for this time comes from the infamous OTR series Inner Sanctum. It is titled The Black Sea Gull and is every bit as creepy as it sounds. Peter Lorre gives a better than average performance as a man deals with the grief of losing his wife and then his mind. It first aired on the Inner Sanctum on April 7, 1943.

Program note: The art for this episode was painted by Genny Travali. It was created for the EP Black Seagull by Noemi Terrasi. You can learn more about her music and listen to the song that inspired it at: noemiterrasi.bandcamp.com/album/black-seagull

Other Stories Include – Murder If You Please, Strange Things in the Woods, The Unfortunate Tractor, We Saw Bigfoot, Bedroom Orb, Who’s That Knocking, Ghost Through The Arch, and The Black Seagull

This Week’s Podcast – 6/17/21

I receive lots of responses to the stories I play on the show. Most of these are comments on whether the person liked it, was freaked out, or hated it. I also get responses that say that the events of the story triggered a memory of what happened to them.  This week’s podcast is all about those.

Rons Picture

The tales are usually short. In fact too short to use on the These are Your Stories segment. However, I am going to read a few of these and try to give them some context as a group of stories rather than by themselves. I call it the big-little experiment. What I am going to do is to string your listener experiences into, hopefully, a cohesive segment. Tune in this week to find out if it works.

Also on the podcast we will have an OTR story from the series Inner Sanctum. It is titled The Black Seagull and stars the great character actor Peter Lorre.
