Big Mack

USAT John L. Clem

John “Big Mack” McConnell who just had his 92nd birthday sent this story in via his great grandson John the 4th, who is 9 years old.  The story takes place in June of 1944 on board the hospital ship The USAT John L. Clem.  They had just entered the Mediterranean Sea for service and were tasked as a transport ship. They would take injured personnel from Sicily or Naples and then take them to either Oran or Algiers. It was a rough time in that area. Constant battles meant constant movement. They even came under fire from time to time.

The John Clem was an old ship, had various names during her travels, and she had served in both wars. She was built in 1917 as a cruise ship and Big Mack was it’s most recent ship’s engineer. The crew had come to believe the ship was haunted. Everyone on board including crew, support troops and patients all could tell some kind of story.

Here is Big Mack’s Story:

We were the only Hospital Ship in the area that day in August.  So, it was up to us to take both American and German injured. We would have to come fairly close to shore to load the victims of this bloody assault.  There were so many that it was all hands on deck loading them. A man, clear as day, took my hands in his and pulled me to the deck. A second later a round of machine gun fire hit the lifeboat that I had been unloading. If I had been standing there I would have been hit and probably killed. Unfortunately, this was a common event (stray gunfire happened a lot).

I looked around to thank the man and I found that not only was I alone, but the soldier I was helping was gone too. I don’t know what happened, others who saw the event told me it looked to them like I had just fallen down. Lucky fall and all.  I kept the truth to myself, but I know I just hadn’t fallen down.

John “Big Mack” McConnell

To “Big Mack” I say thank you for sharing your story with us, and more importantly thank you for your service.

RAS #475 – In Pursuit Of A Ghost

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we have a story from Alex in Saint Bernard Parish who encounters a couple who drowned during Katrina. Then we play a classic story from director and actor Orson Welles. In this one we learn that it might be best if you tell the truth from the start to avoid unnecessary complications. We end the show with some Dominios history that the company would rather forget. I am sure we all understand that.

Featured Story – Pursuit of a Ghost

Our featured story is all about  Harry Lime from the celebrated 1949 film The Third Man. In that film Orson Welles’ character, Harry Lime, was killed. So our tale is a “prequel” of sorts.  Harry tries some shenanigans to get some cash and finds himself lost in a battle to find the criminal El Zorro. What we have is an episode from the OTR series The Lives Of Harry Lime. It comes from November of 1951 and is tilted In Pursuit of a Ghost.

Branch

On the blog this time we have one of my favorite stories from podcasts past. This email comes from Branch a listener from Midland, Texas. I don’t know what it is about Texas, but either you guys really love the show or there is a whole lot of paranormal stuff going on down there.

Here is Branch’s Email:

Ron,

I am a cowboy of sorts and by that I mean of a sort. I work for a community gun range as an instructor and gunsmith. We take safety very seriously at our range, but no matter how careful you are accidents happen. A young man had just bought his pistol and did not quite understand the rules of the range. He fired his pistol downrange before the all clear was sounded. Unfortunately, I was clearing out targets at the time and was shot through my side. The last thing I remember was falling to the ground thinking that this was it.

They got me to the hospital in time but I had lost a lot of blood and it was touch and go for several days. One night I woke up and standing at the end of my bed was a cowboy dressed completely in black. His face was hidden and all I could see was his red eyes. It didn’t speak, but I knew why he was there. He was waiting for me. This happened every night for the next few days. Once he was right beside me with arm stretched out as if to take me away. I remember waking and telling him, “I’m not ready”.

The next night I awoke again and expected to see the ugly cowhand hanging over me like a vulture waiting for its dinner. To my surprise I saw my father standing there with a serene smile on his face. He took my hand and told me that I was going to be okay. His touch shot through me like a pistol and the warmth I felt I knew I could believe him. I went back to a comfortable sleep.

The next morning, I woke up feeling really good. I thought about the night before and then it hit me. My father has been dead for ten years. Do I know what really happened? Nope, but I made a full recovery and am now back at work. The guy who shot me? He was charged and also banned from the club.

Your Friend,

Branch

What can you say about a story like that? Incredible and amazing. I have heard tales like this before and each time they still send chills down my spine.

This Week’s Podcast: On the podcast this week we have a OTR special story from Orson Welles himself. It is titled In Pursuit of a Ghost and is not what you think. Also, on the show a listener sent in a poltergeist story that is titled, I Wish This Was A Dream. You won’t want to miss either of these. You can listen to this podcast on Thursday at Ron’s Amazing Stories, download it from Apple Podcasts, stream it on Stitcher Radio or on the mobile version of Spotify. Do you prefer the radio? RAS #474 – Savannah Georgia

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we have something pretty special. Jason Dowd is back and we take a journey with him to the city of Savannah, GA. You will not believe the ghost stories he experienced while staying at the Planter’s Inn. Also on the show are two listener tales that fall directly into the category of the head scratcher. A postman tries to make a delivery and is halted by a ghost, and a shadow on the wall defies any logic. We end the show with a brand new Johnny Is It True, alien edition.

About Jason Dowd – From an early age, Jason has loved his art. Over the years he has used various mediums, but none was more profound to him than photography. He finds inspiration wherever he goes because he keeps his eyes open for things that will make the perfect photo. Jason lives in the great state of Florida and has been a part of Ron’s Amazing Stories since the beginning. He first appeared on the podcast in episode #78 where he introduced us to his book A Haunted Soul: A True Story of One Man’s Struggle with the Paranormal. If that wasn’t enough Jason is our radio producer. He has been putting the podcast out on the radio for the last 5 years! Jason is also the CEO and founder of Gladys Goodies.
