RAS #714 – Echoes Through Time

This week on Ron’s Amazing Stories, we take you back into the shadowy world of Suspense — one of radio’s greatest achievements and the last show to fade out at the end of the Golden Age. Our theme this time is time and perception, and we’ve got two unforgettable stories that explore both.

Our first tale is Time On My Hands, a husband and wife set out to do the impossible — go back in time to stop Adolf Hitler. Can history be rewritten, or is time itself the one enemy no man can defeat? Then, we’ll step into A World of Darkness (January 20, 1944). Told through the eyes — or rather, the ears — of a blind man, this gripping mystery reveals how sound can paint pictures far more vivid than sight ever could. Between these stories, we’ll pause for a brief look at the history of Suspense, the show that kept listeners on edge for over two decades and closed the curtain on radio’s golden era.

RAS #699 – Ears That Betray, Eyes That See

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this week, Ears That Betray, Eyes That See. We head into the murky world of eavesdropping, unspoken truths, and the heavy price of hearing too much. With two chilling tales from the golden age of radio, we explore how curiosity doesn’t just kill the cat—it occasionally takes a few bystanders with it.

Stories Featured:

  • The Whistler – “The Witness” – Original Air Date: July 8, 1951 – A brilliant young architect sees his career implode—only to be offered a lifeline from a coworker with a price. When ambition mixes with manipulation, the cost of success may be far higher than anyone imagined.
  • Suspense – “Sorry, Wrong Number” – Original Air Date: May 25, 1943 – Written by Lucille Fletcher. Starring Agnes Moorehead in her most legendary radio performance. An invalid woman, confined to her bed, overhears a phone call that pulls her into a deadly web. Frantic, powerless, and unheard—her night spirals into sheer terror.

Host’s Note: From architects of fate to victims of coincidence, both tales remind us that sometimes, hearing too much—or seeing too clearly—can be the beginning of the end. Evil doesn’t knock. It whispers. And if you’re unlucky enough to be listening… well, you’ve already invited it in.

RAS #672 – Suspense Double Feature

This time on Ron’s Amazing Stories we delve into two stories from the OTR series Suspense. The first story, titled Slow Burn, stars Dick Powell as a boxer navigating the dangerous world of the sport. The second story, The Death of Alexander Jordan, explores the chilling tale of a man consumed by the fear of being buried alive.

Suspense

Suspense aired from 1942 to 1962, captivating audiences with its thrilling stories and unexpected twists. Originally broadcast on CBS Radio, the show was known for its high-quality production and was often described as “radio’s outstanding theater of thrills.” Initially orchestrated by the esteemed director William Spier, it featured a wide array of stories, usually focusing on characters in perilous or mysterious situations, often ending with a surprising or sinister twist.

One of the most famous episodes, Sorry, Wrong Number, starred Agnes Moorehead and became so popular it was made into a film. Over its two-decade run, Suspense became a staple on radio, influencing future generations of storytelling both in radio and television.

RAS #664 – The Devil Doctor

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this time we explore the different “types” of monsters, suggesting that they arise from exaggerations, bad food, and fashion disasters. Then we have two listener stories that defy any kind of explanation. Marc Reese from San Antonio recalls his adventure at Phantom Lake Canal, and Mattie Pittman from Glenns Ferry tells of her encounter with Parma’s Angel. Our featured story is titled The Devil Doctor and comes from The Witch’s Tale radio series. Also, we have a Johnny Is It True segment all about The DarkSide Of The Moon. We end the show with Ron reading a dark tale suggested by Justin Suttles.

Since last week was a bust we are going to complete the Month Of Spooky 2024 this week. As many of you noted and commented on, there was no podcast last week. I had a health issue that landed me in the hospital for a few days. I am still not at my best, but there is a plan to get things back on track.

Now, you should press that play button and enjoy the show!

Featured Story – The Devil Doctor

The Witch's Tale

Our featured story comes from a little known OTR series The Witch’s Tale. It was a horror-fantasy radio series which aired from 1931 to 1938 on WOR, The Voice of New York. The tale is titled The Devil Doctor and it is listed as one of the 31 most scary OTR stories ever made. I have to say, I quite agree, and this one is the stuff of nightmares.  What happens when you buy an old house and start renovating it?  It first aired on January 8, 1934

Other Stories Include – The Other Day, I thought – From Bad Dreams to Bad Hair Days: The Origins of Monsters, The Creature at Phantom Lake Canal, Parma’s Angel, Johnny is it True – Dark Side of the Moon, and The Smiling Owl.

The Smiling Owl – We have a story called The Smiling Owl. It was recommended to me by Justin Suttles and comes from the website Creepypasta.com. They collect stories much like we do and are focused on the paranormal.
