RAS #711 – Comedy and Creeps

This week on Ron’s Amazing Stories, we bring you a haunted double feature that’s equal parts laughter and fright!

Our first tale stars Bob Hope in the Screen Directors Playhouse adaptation of The Ghost Breakers (April 3rd, 1949). It’s a spooky romp filled with witty one-liners, mistaken identities, and a manor full of “boo”s and belly laughs.

Then, we trade laughter for goosebumps with Suspense’s Ghost Hunt (June 23rd, 1949). A radio host spends the night in a haunted mansion where the echoes might be more than just sound effects. It’s one of the creepiest stories ever broadcast.

Between our two stories, I’ll be talking about why we love to scare ourselves, how humor helps us face our fears, and a few real-life haunted homes that continue to keep the lights on—and the whispers going. So, grab your flashlight and your funny bone—because this week we’re exploring Comedy and Creeps: A Haunted Double Feature.

What You Will Hear:

  • Introduction: Why we laugh at fear
  • The Screen Directors Playhouse – The Ghost Breakers
  • Ron’s thoughts on laughter vs. fear
  • Suspense – Ghost Hunt
  • Closing commentary on hauntings and human curiosity

RAS #670 – Logger’s Larceny

On Ron’s Amazing Stories! In this episode, Ron reviews Louis L’Amour’s novel The High Graders. We follow this with two listener stories: Keenan’s time slip tale and Raygan’s baffling story of synchronicity. Both are amazing! Our featured story comes from the OTR series Tales of the Texas Rangers. While not a western it is a crime drama about a bad man’s poor choices. All of the stories in this series are based on true Texas Ranger case files which technically makes them True Crime! So Ron gives his thoughts on True Crime and its place in our society.

Featured Story – Logger’s Legacy

Tales Of The Texas Rangers

Our featured story comes from the western series Tales Of The Texas Rangers. The series was produced and directed by Stacy Keach Sr. He hired real life Texas Ranger Captain Manuel “Lone Wolf” Gonzaullas as the show’s advisor. Each show followed the same format – an announcer would describe the situation. When the problem was discovered, the Texas Rangers were called in and Jace Pearson was assigned. Our story comes from the final season of the radio show and is titled Logger’s Legacy. It first aired on February 4, 1951.

Other Stories Include – My thoughts on True Crime, Review of The High Graders, Why are you just standing there, and Hey That’s My Name

RAS #669 – The Man In The Moon

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we begin with Ron’s thoughts on the relationship between science fiction and real science, highlighting the blend of plausibility and artistic license. Next we review the audiobook, Way Station by Clifford D. Simak, a classic science fiction novel about a man who encounters alien travelers.

On These Are Your Stories we have two listener-submitted stories: Night Ride Through Kandal from Cambodia and The Whisper in the Orchard from the Philippines.

The featured story is The Man in the Moon from the OTR series Dimension X, a suspenseful tale set in the future. We end the show with an AI generated story. Ron asked Google’s Gemini to write a three minute science fiction story about a fight between a turtle and an alien. You won’t believe the results.

Featured Story – The Man in the Moon

Dimension X

Our featured story comes from the OTR series Dimension X. It is titled The Man in the Moon and was an original story written by George Lefferts. The Bureau of Missing persons are in the process of putting out a radio broadcast of a missing person when they receive an SOS from the Moon. It first aired on Dimension X on July 14, 1950.

Other Stories Include – Warp Drive Meets Duct Tape, Review – Way Station by Clifford D. Simak, Night Ride Through Kandal, The Whisper in the Orchard, and The Terrapin Warrior

RAS #664 – The Devil Doctor

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this time we explore the different “types” of monsters, suggesting that they arise from exaggerations, bad food, and fashion disasters. Then we have two listener stories that defy any kind of explanation. Marc Reese from San Antonio recalls his adventure at Phantom Lake Canal, and Mattie Pittman from Glenns Ferry tells of her encounter with Parma’s Angel. Our featured story is titled The Devil Doctor and comes from The Witch’s Tale radio series. Also, we have a Johnny Is It True segment all about The DarkSide Of The Moon. We end the show with Ron reading a dark tale suggested by Justin Suttles.

Since last week was a bust we are going to complete the Month Of Spooky 2024 this week. As many of you noted and commented on, there was no podcast last week. I had a health issue that landed me in the hospital for a few days. I am still not at my best, but there is a plan to get things back on track.

Now, you should press that play button and enjoy the show!

Featured Story – The Devil Doctor

The Witch's Tale

Our featured story comes from a little known OTR series The Witch’s Tale. It was a horror-fantasy radio series which aired from 1931 to 1938 on WOR, The Voice of New York. The tale is titled The Devil Doctor and it is listed as one of the 31 most scary OTR stories ever made. I have to say, I quite agree, and this one is the stuff of nightmares.  What happens when you buy an old house and start renovating it?  It first aired on January 8, 1934

Other Stories Include – The Other Day, I thought – From Bad Dreams to Bad Hair Days: The Origins of Monsters, The Creature at Phantom Lake Canal, Parma’s Angel, Johnny is it True – Dark Side of the Moon, and The Smiling Owl.

The Smiling Owl – We have a story called The Smiling Owl. It was recommended to me by Justin Suttles and comes from the website Creepypasta.com. They collect stories much like we do and are focused on the paranormal.
