The Laundry Monster

Our story comes from my backyard Portland, Oregon. One thing there is in Portland is an abundance of Yoga Studios. I am not sure if that is unique to Portland or if that is true around the globe. But it seems like there is one on every corner, along with a coffee shop. We sure do love our coffee here in the Northwest. The tale comes from Brian Stone and he lives in SE Portland. Brian has titled it The Laundry Monster. – Ron

For context, I was 16 at the time and working my first job. I was in charge of doing the laundry and filing papers for a yoga studio. I should note that the laundry room was in the basement and that I was completely by myself when this happened. It was a typical Sunday, a class had just finished, and I was washing the towels. I had my headphones on and was putting the laundry into the washer when I had a feeling of being watched. I’d felt this many times in that basement when I was by myself, but it never felt malevolent though. I do know a few deaths happened in the building when it was in use as a textile factory. I ignored the feeling as I knew our resident ghost, who we affectionately called Charlie, was probably just watching me. Charlie was never violent in any way, he’d occasionally knock things down and make the room feel cold.

As I was putting away laundry when I felt pain below my chest. When I lifted my shirt up I saw three scratch marks and they burned. I remember being in complete shock, taking a picture of the scratches and sending it to my boss, parents and a few friends. They all believed I had simply scratched myself with the door of the washer but the washer door was closed when this happened. I did feel bad energy but I ignored it. After all, I had to do my job.

I went back to work when I heard a few footsteps from behind me. I turned, expecting to see Mara. She is one of the instructors and often came down to help out after closing. No one was there and those disembodied footsteps kept coming straight at me. Then came the growl. It was not like anything on this earth. The pure evil nature of it had me running out of the basement in pure terror. I came up into the main studio and Mara was there. We both went back downstairs but found nothing and all was quiet.

That was the only time while working at that place that I experienced anything like that and l have no explanation for it. – Brian Stone

RAS #587 -The Earthmans Burden

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this time we head to the planet Mercury with the IFP. Ancient astronomers had long suspected that Mercury always presented the same side to the sun, though they were ignorant to the fact that the little planet also had water and air. Complete silliness of course, but not in our story. I think you are going to love this one, and meeting the Mercurians.

Featured Story – The Earthman’s Burden

The Earthman's Burden

Our featured story comes from the pages of the pulp magazines. Specifically, the June 1931 edition of Astounding Stories. It is titled The Earthman’s Burden by R.F. Starzl. It tells of Danny Olear of the Interplanetary Flying Police (IFP). There is foul play on mercury until Danny gets after his man. It is read for us by William Hahn from Sidney, Australia.

Other Stories Include – Study In Ornithology, The Egg and Other Stories by Andy Weir, and The Earthman’s Burden.

The Hired Man

Our story for this week comes from Marion Butler who lives in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. She sent this one into the website via the submission page.  This is one of the strangest ghost stories I have ever heard. Marion has titled it The Hired Man.

Both my parents were in the national guard. Each summer my sister and I would go live with our grandparents on their farm in Kentucky.  We continue to do this today even though my parents have retired from the military.  To say that my gramma’s house is haunted is an understatement. So many stories over so many years and I would love to tell you them all.

The Hired Hand

Let me start with the very first one I remember. We came in late for the summer drop off and my grandparents were asleep. My parents got us tucked into bed and they left because they had to get back. I was eight and my sister was ten.

The next morning an old man came into the room and woke us both up. He said we have a lot of chores to do before the sun comes up. We looked at each other and shrugged. We knew that grandpa had hired help so we figured this was him.

We quickly got ready, as fast as a couple girls can do that, and went downstairs. No grandpa or grandma and it was still dark outside. The old man was there and he pointed outside. He had my sister feed the chickens and pigs and had me gather eggs and sweep out the chicken coop.

We were getting the last of the work done, when my grandpa came out and asked us what we were doing. We told him about the old man and our assigned chores. My grandpa looked quite perplexed. He said the man he hired for the summer was staying in town that night and that he wasn’t old.

Just five minutes before Grandpa came out I was talking with the old man and he was telling how well I was doing my chores.  Well, we looked all over the farm and found no sign of him.  However, that was not the last time we saw him.  I will save that story for another time. – Marion Butler.

Fishing And The Beast

We have a story from Jerry Miller of Portland Oregon. I had a chance to talk with Jerry about his experience and heard him retell it in his own words. It sent chills down my spine. I hope you feel it too.

-Ron

Rons Picture

I love to fish. It is my passion. Although, these days I am a bit more careful as to where I go and I try not to go alone to those isolated spots. This happened to me this past summer and when I tell you that I have a new appreciation for life, after you have heard this tale, I think you will understand.

It was a Saturday morning. I had spent the previous day trying to find someone to come along with me, but I’d struck out. Not a big deal. I’d gone to my spot many times alone and had no fear of doing it. I packed up my truck and headed out to the wilds near Hubbard Oregon.  There is a hidden stream along Old Whiskey Hill Road. The only way to get to it is to hack and whack. After a bit I got to my secret spot where the brown trout roam.

I was about an hour in and still had no bites. I could see them from time to time, but I just had not found the right lure. I had just casted out when I heard a loud snap. Then complete and utter silence. Even the birds had stopped their singing. An eerie calm came over the area. I ran my hand over my Glock G42, that was strapped to my waist, for reassurance. After a few minutes the bird’s sound returned and I returned to my thoughts of fresh trout for dinner. Whatever had been there had moved on. Figuring out that today the fish wanted the red rooster tail, I caught three and was ready to head home.

Snap! Followed by a growl!

Not a bear I knew that for sure. We were too close to town for them to be around. I stood still and just listened. Like before the forest had gone silent and I could hear and feel my heartbeat. I waited for about five minutes then started to move. I got to the main trail with no problem, but waiting for me was a cougar. Rouge male from the looks of him. He looked straight at  me and I heard his thoughts plain and clear. Dinner!

Growing up in the northwest means you understand your surroundings. I have always been told that you should never run from a lion, because running may stimulate a mountain lion’s instinct to chase. Instead, stand and face the animal. I looked at the beast right back and yelled, “Git outta here and for effect I grabbed my gun and waved my arms.

He stepped back.

I yelled again, “Go-On GIT… “. I may have sworn just a bit.

He stepped back.

I pointed my gun and fired two rounds into the dirt. After all the G42 is only a .38 and he was a big fella. This did the trick.  He ran west and I ran east, not stopping until I was safely in my truck. Then I let out my breath, and started to shake.  On my way back home, I stopped at the Hubbard police station, and reported the incident. Later, I found out that he had been captured and relocated. – Jerry Miller

Amazing Story Jerry. I have no idea how I would have reacted. I did a little research online and the Department of Fish and Game agrees with your actions. However, I also reviewed the real statistics of cougar encounters and planned to report it. But, to be honest, I don’t think you want to know.  Thank you for sharing your chilling tale.
