RAS #655 – S.O.S.

On the show this week we visit the history of the radio series CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Then we have four listener stories. An author has something strange happening with one of his manuscripts, a true story about a deadman floating home, a pen that can duplicate itself, and a ghost boy who lives in a cemetery. Our featured story asks the question, What does crime look like in the year 2185? A group of criminals find out that crime doesn’t pay. The story is titled SOS and comes from the OTR series The Mysterious Traveler.

Our featured story comes from the OTR series Mysterious Traveler. The radio series debuted in 1943 on the Mutual Broadcasting System. Our story is about a gang of thieves working in the future, 2185 to be exact, and coming to the realization that not only doesn’t crime pay, but also has its consequences. As you might guess this one falls under the umbrella of science fiction. It is oddly titled SOS and first aired on May 2, 1950.

A Wolf Encounter?

This story was sent in by Tambra Souza who didn’t say where she was from. We have not had one quite like this and I really don’t know what to make of it. I do have some thoughts on this after you read the story. Tambra has titled this A Wolf Encounter.

My husband and I visited my in-laws one night. They live in a rural area with few streetlights. It was a typical fall night and we stayed at their place until around midnight. It was a clear night. No rain, no mist, no fog. Just a clear, cool fall night. Since it was late and there were so few people that lived in that area, the roads were deserted. It was just us alone on the road.

All of a sudden, my husband and I both saw something in the middle of the road in front of us. He slammed on the brakes at the exact same moment that I yelled “watch out!” In the middle of the road was what looked like a large dog or wolf. It was in the form of a white mist, but it was definitely there in front of us, and we definitely both saw it at the same moment. We had looked at each other in disbelief and when we turned back, it had vanished.

I said to him, “Did you see that too?”

He described seeing a transparent white wolf that appeared out of nowhere. I only saw the front half. We had no explanation for how we both saw the same thing at the same time, or how it had vanished into thin air.

We were very freaked out the rest of the way home that night. We were afraid it was some sort of bad omen but nothing bad happened. I’ve often wondered about it. Was it a sign of some kind? I don’t know. – Tambra Souza

Ron’s Thoughts: Well Tambra, was it a sign? The obvious attribute of the wolf is its nature as a predator. Also, it is strongly associated with ferocity, loyalty, sharp intelligence and appetite for freedom. Making it the symbol of the warrior on one hand, and that of the devil on the other. Of all land animals, the Wolf is rumored to have the strongest supernatural powers and is the most accomplished hunter. I hope that helps. Either way this is one strange story. Thank you for sharing it with us.

RAS #654 – The Shady Lane Matter

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we have one of the last series to leave the air waves during the golden age of radio, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. It is a detective drama that aired for over twelve years on Radio. The show followed the cases of the man, “with the action-packed expense account”. Our story is listed in the Radiobook Hall Of Fame as one of the top ten best of the series. A murder takes place in a small town, and Constable Jed Bramler can’t believe that anyone from there could kill the sweet Ellen Bates. There is an insurance payout waiting and Johnny is sent to find the truth. Is the husband guilty? The story is titled The Shady Lane Matter and it first aired, over five nights, from July 7th through 13th, 1956.

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this Thursday we have one of the last series to leave the air waves during the golden age of radio. Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar is a detective drama that aired for over twelve years. The show followed the cases of the man with the action-packed expense account. Johnny Dollar was portrayed by eight different actors during its run, with Bob Bailey being the most popular. The show was unique for not having a partner, assistant, or secretary for Johnny, and for its realistic portrayal of the insurance investigation industry. Characters would even mention hearing about Johnny’s cases on the radio, adding to the show’s credibility. Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar attracted top Hollywood writers and is considered one of the finest radio detective shows ever produced. The final episode aired in September, 1962.

Our story is listed in the Radiobook Hall Of Fame as one of the top ten best of the series.
