Out Of Body

What is an out-of-body experience? The certified and verified definition is: An out-of-body experience (OBE or sometimes OOBE) is an experience that typically involves a feeling of floating outside one’s body and, in some cases, the feeling of perceiving one’s physical body from a place outside one’s body.

I think that is a pretty poor definition, and because of this Jason and I decided to do an episode on the subject. While you wait for the Horror Express podcast to publish, here are my thoughts on the subject.

Let’s start off with what I think should be the definition of a OOBE: They are eerie sensations, more common than one might think. For example: A man describes feeling a shadowy figure standing behind him, then turns around to find no one there. A woman feels herself leaving her body and floating in space, then looking down on her corporeal self. These experiences are often attributed by those who have them as being paranormal. However, neuroscientists tell us they can be induced by delivering a mild electric current to specific spots in the brain.

It is true! A zap to a brain region called the angular gyrus has resulted in a sensations that the patient described as hanging from the ceiling, looking down at their body. In another test electrical current produced an uncanny feeling that someone was behind the patient and was intent on interfering with their actions. These are confirmed experiments. So does that mean that all OBE’s are induced? I have to say the jury is still out on that one, but this may help to explain at least some of these experiences.

RAS #293 – The Veldt

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this week we turn to the future to tell our stories. We have a sci-fi tale about what lies ahead for our nurseries and the dangers that could hold and, a boy learns just how hard it can be in space. Also, we have comments and questions from you guys. Should be a pretty fun show.

Our OTR story – The Veldt

Ray Bradbury told some truly amazing stories in his day, and this one is no exception. Imagine a nursery, fully automated, that allows its children to create any virtual environment they desire. What we have this week is based on a short-story originally titled, The World the Children Made. Later it would be edited and titled The Veldt, and would be part of Bradbury’s classic short-story collection The Illustrated Man in 1951. What you will hear is an adaption to radio for X Minus One.

True or False with Frank Sinatra

Q1 – Frank Sinatra was born December 12, 1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Italian immigrants. He almost died at birth.

True – Frank almost died during childbirth – the doctor had trouble removing the 13 ½ pound baby Frank from his mother, scarring him with forceps and puncturing his eardrum. Frank’s grandmother, Rose, noticed the baby wasn’t breathing and held him under cold running water until he finally began to breathe. Because of his eardrum he would not be allowed to serve in the military.

Q2 – Amazing as it sounds Franks Sinatra and Bing Crosby never met.

False – Frank knew he had to be a singer after seeing Bing Crosby live at Loew’s Journal Square in New Jersey. Also, he first appeared on-screen with his hero Bing Crosby in the 1956 movie High Society, which also marked Grace Kelly’s final performance before she became Princess of Monaco.

Q3 – Sinatra had his first musical break with local music group The Hoboken Four in 1935, winning the popular Major Bowes and His Original Amateur Hour radio contest.

True – After his radio success he was able to sign a contracts. in the swing era, with bandleaders Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. The rest was history and he went on to sell 150 million records worldwide.

Q4 – Frank Sinatra was not allowed to entertain the troops for most of World War II.

True – He did travelled to Europe to entertain the U.S.O. troops during World War II in 1945, with Phil Silvers. However, the FBI prevented Frank from traveling on previous tours. Briefly, there were rumors reported by columnist Walter Winchell that Sinatra paid $40,000 to avoid the service, but the FBI found this to be without merit.

Q5 – Frank Sinatra Jr. was kidnapped and held for ransom in December of 1963.

True – Frank Sr. paid a ransom of $240,000 to free the then 19 year-old Frank Jr. from kidnappers. After being held for several days, Frank Jr. was released safely. The FBI eventually caught the kidnappers and recovered most of the ransom money.

Q6 – Sinatra never did as much as people thought. In truth he really had just a few hit songs and made two movies (High Society and From Here to Eternity).

False – Whoa, that was really false! He performed on more than 1,400 recordings in a 6-decade career, appeared in more than 60 films, and produced 8 movies. He actually won an Academy Award for, From Here to Eternity, he starred in The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), and received critical acclaim for his performance in The Manchurian Candidate (1962). The awards and accolades are too many to list here. You can go to this page to learn more.

Q7 – Frank Sinatra raised millions of dollars for his work with various charities.

False – Throughout his life, Frank Sinatra raised more than one billion dollars for charities around the world. How about that?!

RAS #292 – Stagecoach Stop

On Ron’s Amazing Stories this week we have a wood carving that travels through time, a stagecoach that travels through Fort Laramie, and Rudyard Kipling tells one of his classic stories called, How the Whale Got his Throat.

Our OTR Story – Stagecoach Stop

I love today’s old time radio story. It speaks to things that are as important today as they were in the 1880’s. It comes from Fort Laramie, which was a CBS Radio Western series starring Raymond Burr as Captain Lee Quince. It aired Sunday afternoons January through October in 1956. The show producers wanted to be a close to reality as possible. The names used for places, buildings and some of the people were real. Our tale is called “Stagecoach Stop” and it first aired on April 15, 1956.

The Horror Express:

We have a new website for the Horror Express. That is not really new news, but we just cleaned things up and gave it a much needed simple URL. You can now type thehorrorexpress.com and bing, bang, bong you are there (Don’t forget the “the”).

Jason and I are working on the new episode of the show. Show number 16’s topic will be: Out Of Body Experiences. Jason will have a very special interview for that show that I can’t wait to hear. Also, the response to the Haunted Doll series has been off the charts and we have more stories and questions from you guys. Thanks for that!

Jason and I know that you want more of The Horror Express podcasts. Jason is a full time radio producer and photographer and I have my editing business. So, we get them done as fast we can. However, starting in late August or early September Jason and I will make use of the HE website and start to publish a blog. We hope that you guys will join us and continue your support there.

I have to say that you guys are becoming more active with the show every week and I love it! Thank-you so much for all of the comments, suggestions and stories! The most often asked question I get is, “how do I get my story to you?” We have talked about this before and I think it is worth going over again. There are basically three ways to tell your story. You can tell it to me and I will write it up, you can write it yourself and send it to me via email (or the contact section of the website), or you can come on the show and tell it live! The choice is yours and I do hope you make that choice. Everyone has some story to tell and we want to hear it.
