The Scratching Ghost Dog

I think the most common paranormal story is the head scratcher. Those stories that confound logic. Here is one sent by Timothy O’Leary, who writes to us from St. Paul, Minnesota. He has titled his story, The Scratching Ghost Dog.

I believe there could be a spirit animal in my house, or at least one that visits. I am not sure what it all means but I have had three experiences that give me pause. After you have heard these stories I would very much like to have someone debunk them. It would make me feel better.

Experience 1 – I was home alone with my son, who was almost one at the time. He was asleep upstairs and I had the baby monitor on. I heard a faint dog bark coming from the monitor. Worried it was next-door neighbor’s dog and that it would wake my son, I went up to check on him. He was asleep and the window was closed. I looked outside and didn’t see or hear a dog. I went back downstairs and a few minutes later I heard a dog bark so loud it sounded like it was directly into the monitor. I ran upstairs again to check on my son, but found nothing. This time I decided to stay to see if I could hear anything. I stood in the bathroom doorway, which is at a right angle to my son’s room. The bedroom door was propped open by a long toy snake. That toy slowly started to slide away from the door. I watched in disbelief. Suddenly the door slammed shut and my son started crying. Terrified, I burst through the door, grabbed my son, and ran downstairs.

Later, feeling a bit better, and perhaps a little silly I decided to go to bed. I took my son with me to sleep in our room. I walked to the bottom of the stairs and my two cats were around my feet waiting to be fed. They started walking up the stairs with me a couple of steps ahead. About halfway up the stairs they stopped, hissed and bolted back downstairs. It scared me enough to stop me going up. When my wife got home I told her about it. She said that she had heard a dog earlier that morning.

Experience 2 – One night around 2am my wife heard scratching on the door. We keep it closed to stop the cats from coming in at night. At first she ignored it, but it got so persistent that she got up, switched on the hall light, opened the door, and looked down the stairs. She noticed the dining room light was on and could see a small dark shadow moving around in front of the front  door. Thinking it was one of the cats she walked downstairs expecting to see our black cat, but she wasn’t there. My wife walked room to room looking for the cats. When she got to the kitchen she found both cats asleep in their bed. Scared, she turned all the lights on and went back to bed. The scratching stopped.

Experience 3 – It was my son’s birthday party a couple of years ago and my brother was sitting in my living room. When he turned to pick up his drink, he saw a small black dog walk into my kitchen. He knows we have a black cat, but said this was bigger and it intrigued him enough to get up and have a look. He walked into the kitchen and nothing was there. He knew nothing about the previous events that had occurred.

We’ve heard scratching at the bedroom door many times only to see nothing when opening it. My son is six years old now and has said that a small black dog has sat on the end of his bed at night. It couldn’t be either cat because they aren’t allowed upstairs at night and we ensure they are downstairs before we go to bed.  So, what do you think? Is this a common thing? I should also mention that we’ve never owned a dog. I did have one growing up as a child but he was huge and not a spec of black on him. – Timothy O’Leary

Well Tim, I have no idea about that, but I can answer one of your questions. No this is not a common thing! – Ron

The Ghost Of The Abandoned Railway

This story comes from Toni with an I and that is all I know about her. I did play around with Toni’s IP address and can confirm that she lives in … Wait for it.. Somewhere in the United States. How about that? She did title her story The Ghost Of The Abandoned Railway. These are the types of stories that really freak me out.

The Ghost Of The Abandoned Railway

Some time ago I was out hiking with my friends. The trail ended near an abandoned railway track. It was around 9 pm. Now you might be asking why we would be hiking so late? That is a very good question.

We were walking down the railway and when we got to a crossing that was also abandoned and quite creepy I might add. We heard something in the bushes. I shone my flashlight on the area but nothing was there. Then out of nowhere there came a freaking scream! It was high pitched like a woman’s scream and quite melodic. We all turned to look in that direction. What I saw I will never forget. Standing there in the dark was a human-like figure. It was all white with long hair and It had black holes for eyes. It just came from behind a tree and it then disappeared as quickly as it came. The tree was a small sapling so nothing could hide behind it.  Well, we all freaked out and ran towards the crossing shack. We hid there for a while, but nothing else happened.

The next day I did some research and it turns out a woman died on that crossing just before that track was closed for good.  I am not sure what it was but we all saw the same thing.  – Toni (with an I)

Well Toni I I am not sure what I would have done. I might not have run to the crossing shack, but would have just kept on running.  I too wonder why you were hiking at 9pm! Thank you for your story.

It Did What… To Spiderman?

Our Story comes from Joseph Brandbury of Essex, England. Joes sent this one in via the story submission page and also has posted it on Reddit. He has titled it, It Did What To… Spiderman.

Hello I’m Joe I’m 20 now, but at the time the events of this story happened I was around 10 (also ignore my crappy grammar). It was the winter of 2013 just before Christmas (maybe 2-3 weeks before) my sister Elly started noticing stuff moving but she thought – No biggie we have 3 cats that roam about at night. but it got weirder, she started seeing orbs flying around her room and objects were being moved to places cats could not move them to. So my mum, who knows about these things, managed to move these ghosts out of her room and we all thought it was over…. until it affected me.

It did what...to Spiderman?

It was kind of the same thing that happened to Elly but even worse because it moved my teddy bears while they were in my hand. I thought that it was my other sister Antonia. We all thought she was just trying to scare us. Then at night my TV started turning on by itself and tilting sideways, this repeated for around 3-4 days. Then it happened! While I was trying to sleep I noticed all my spider man posters started turning by themselves. My thought was,”I don’t wanna die like every teen in a horror movie does.” so I screamed as loud as I could and ran to my parents room. The whole family woke up. When we went back to my room all the posters were stuck on the wall by only 1 blue tack. The next day I burned them all and got new ones. This all continued and like before my Mum took care of it. Now we are all still waiting for it to happen again. Joseph Brandbury

Okay that is just scary. Also, I’m sure even Spiderman didn’t think much of it. This sounds like poltergeist activity. Was there any emotional stuff going on with your family at the time? Just a thought. Thank you Joe for sharing your story.

Ghost In The Pool

We are back with These Are Your Stories blog edition. I took a break for the month of spooky and that got extended, so here we are. I love stories like the one we have this week. It comes from the wild state of Nevada and was sent in by Samantha Grim. She has titled it Ghost In The Pool.

Ghost In The Pool

First off, I didn’t see it in the pool. It was afterwards. After my sister accidentally kicked me in the eye while in the pool. I decided to pull a prank on her and pretend she gave me a bruised eye. So, I grabbed my mother’s makeup palette and did the best I could to fake a black eye, and it seemed believable. I walked upstairs to the loft where my sister and her friends were hanging out and I showed her my eye. She obviously freaked out. I made her apologize before she wiped my eye and realized it was makeup. She punched me and we had a good laugh.

I went downstairs to the bathroom to wash it off. As I was bent over to wash my eye, in my peripheral vision I saw a small frail boy, wearing a striped shirt and boarding shorts. He had a bowl cut and was glaring at me with distorted facial features. Knowing there were no children as young as he at this party, I immediately stood up straight and looked towards him. He was gone. I backed up into the corner of the bathroom and looked around the room, my heart beating out of my chest. I ran out of the room and told my sister.

After a few months had passed, I had completely forgotten about that event, and so had my sister. One evening I went into my parents room to get a shirt I had left in there from the previous night. My parents room and the bathroom are connected by a pair of double doors with frosted glass, just like most of the doors in our house. I found my shirt and was on my way out when I noticed two small handprints on one of the frosted glass panes. I stopped to have a better look at it, each handprint was as small as the palms of my hands. I felt shocked, but then I got shivers on every inch of my body as I remembered what happened after the pool party not too long ago. My heart sank and I ran to the kitchen, grabbing some cleaning supplies and desperately tried wiping it off. But it didn’t come off at all and even made it somewhat clearer. I decided to ignore it , but it is currently still there. It creeps me out whenever I go into my parents room or especially the bathroom. – Samantha Grim (Las Vegas)

Our Little Ghost

This time we have a story from JC Moore in Bonita, California. From what I gather this is not a large town at all so, a shout to everyone there!  We have had a lot of stories like this on the show, but never one that truly defies any explanation. JC writes:

Our Little Ghost

I was thirteen years old when we moved here to Bonita. We bought a small farm just outside of town and had just moved in when things began to happen. The first was that the back door would open itself. No matter what we did or how we locked it, it opened somehow. My dad thought it was us kids and we thought it was them. So, we all agreed to put a camera on the door and watch it.

Right at the stroke of midnight the door shook and opened on its own. We have video proof of it. From there more stuff happened.  One night at dinner we heard the back door open.  Then the kitchen door swung open and shut and it all ended with bang on the front door. We all laughed and dad said, “Well I guess it didn’t want to go around the house.”

Again we all saw this! We have gotten used to our little ghost. You can feel it when it is around and it likes to play jokes on us all time.  Its favorite game is, Hide The Keys. I wanted to tell my story because most of your ghost stories are scary. I wanted people to know that there are friendly spirits out there too. I am 15 now and love my life with my ghost. – JC Moore

The first question that comes to my mind is: “What happens when you have guests?” I have very little doubt that there are good spirits out there.  Thank you for sharing!
