Awesome Hotel and the ghosts are pretty cool too!

I love stories that come from places I have seen. In the early 2000’s my company sent me to Austin, Texas for some training. I was there off and on for about four months. During that time I did a little sightseeing and one of the places I visited was along the RiverWalk. I saw the Alamo and the famous Menger Hotel in San Antonio, TX. Why is the place famous? When the Civil War and Reconstruction were over, and especially after the railroad arrived in 1877, the Menger became the best-known hotel in the Southwest. It was praised for the cuisine offered in the Colonial Dining Room. True stuff. I never stayed there or ate there, but it is a beautiful place!

Boyd Gray from Texas has a different experience with the hotel. He sent this in via the website and gave it the title, Awesome Hotel and the ghosts are pretty cool too!

I’m sure most people that are into ghosts or the paranormal have heard about the Menger Hotel. It has a long history and has seen its fair share of events, but I won’t bore you with it ( it doesn’t hurt that it is parked next to the Alamo either). I Love the Menger and not because it produces some of my favorite encounters but because it is a great old hotel and the staff there is always on point. I’m not much of a modern hotel guy. I like a hotel with history and charm instead of a modern look or a bunch of extras.

THE MENGER HOTEL

Story time! My first stay at the Menger didn’t produce results and even the ghost tour was pretty standard but hey it was well done and I learned the history. The next trip back was a different story. I booked there again because I just like the hotel and the staff. I Checked in and went up to my room which was located on the Alamo side unlike the first time. I passed a mirror in the hallway that overlooked the balcony and I saw a woman dressed in period clothing. At first I thought it was one of the ghost tour ladies cause that’s how they dressed, but by the time I wiped my head around to look at her…. she wasn’t there.

I shook my head. I thought I was overlaying the painting from downstairs in my head, however, when I got closer to my room door there was another mirror at the end of the hallway and I saw her in the reflection again. I turned around to see if there was someone behind me and there was no one. That made me uneasy but I smiled and thought that this was going to be a good trip even if I didn’t experience another thing.

Well, it didn’t stop there. Later that night I was getting ready to go out to dinner. My bathroom light came on all by itself, and no joke it looked like there was a shadow being cast onto the floor coming out of the bathroom. I walked over and looked in and couldn’t find a reason for the shadow, which I was now standing on. Well, I quickly finished getting ready and went to dinner ( I needed a drink LOL).

At dinner, my client asked how I liked the Menger and I told him I loved it. He asked if I had seen any shadows without people attached to him. I told him about the mirror woman but not the shadow in the bathroom. I wanted to figure that one out first. Got back to my room and the light was off in the bathroom, as I walked by I said thank you for turning it off half-joking. I put my stuff down and returned to the bathroom and turned the light on, no shadow. I tried some different things to make it happen but nothing close and all I kept thinking was there was a ghost laughing his butt off watching me try and figure it out! The night finished out quietly.

I have other experiences from that hotel that I could share. One involves a talking TV with the sound turned off.  Freaky bit of ghosting that was.

The Run-Around Man

Our story this week was sent to us via Reddit and was written by Lee Garcia from New York. It is the perfect example of the head-scratcher. What is that you might ask? Simply put, that is a story that defies any explanation.

Before my family moved, we lived in a small town called Waterford, outside Albany, NY. It was along the Mohawk River, and is very close to where the Mohawk and Hudson connect in the Erie Canal system. We lived in a small house at the time, around 15 years ago.

My parents both had instances in the house where they would hear me as a three year old having conversations by myself in my room. They were freaked out by this, obviously. When they asked me who it was, I would always give the same response, “The Run-Around Man”

This also coincided with an experience they had where the lights in the kitchen would turn on and off at will. When they had someone come look at it, they said it was perfectly fine but it never stopped. One day my father was watching the wall switch and it moved on its own right in front of him.

Years later my parents found out, from some people who had lived in the town for many years, that the house used to be occupied by a handyman in the 1920s and 30s. He was referred to around town as “The Run-Around Man”. His family lived there until a fire nearly destroyed the house and he was killed. On a side note; my family moved from that house in the mid-2000s. It was torn down after massive flooding from Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Lee Garcia – New York

Well Lee not much anyone can say about that. It truly left me scratching my head in wonder. I am always interested in looking things up and I decided to look into waterford. I found an amazing photo of the flooded streets in 2012. I also found this little tale.

Cohoes Falls is a waterfall that runs off the Mohawk River between the city of Cohoes and the town of Waterford. It was originally named Gahaoose, meaning “The Place of Falling Canoe.” Legend has it that a Native American girl was canoeing on the river one summer night when the current overtook her, forcing her to fall off the falls to her death. Her ghost has since been spotted on nights of the full moon, wearing war paint and paddling against the rapids.

Grandma’s Rocking Chair

“We are an impossibility in an impossible universe.” Ray Bradbury said that, and when you take in context with our stories, it makes all of these strange things possible. We can say we don’t believe this or that can’t be true. But, in truth, what in the universe is absolute? Only God knows the answer to that. This one from Allison Flores tests the boundaries of this premise in a story titled Grandma’s Rocking Chair.

Grandma'S Rocking Chair

When I was very young my grandmother passed away. I met her only a few times. The concept of death was not something I understood and I wasn’t even sure what was going on or why everyone was sad. I remember walking through the funeral looking at everyone crying and feeling so lost, feeling like I had something wrong with me. “Why am I not crying, what is wrong with me.” I thought to myself.

This funeral was far from where I lived so we flew across the country to get there. We were staying in my grandmother’s house that she lived in and raised 4 kids in, all by herself. I was staying with my mom and I must have been about 5 or 6 years old. According to her I got up in the middle of the night and asked my mother if it was alright if I went to the bathroom, to which she of course said yes. I went to the bathroom and my mom heard me talking, thinking I was talking to myself. When I got  back I told her, “Mommy there is a lady sitting on the rocking chair outside the room.”

My mom, for obvious reasons, freaked out. She walked out of the room and of course nobody was there. But the rocking chair was sitting in the middle of the hallway. She put the chair back where it belonged and went back to bed. Later that night my sister came into the room and woke us both up. She said that there was a banging on her door. My mom came out and in the middle of the hallway was that same rocking chair.

This is absolutely true and my mother confirms all of it. I like to think of it as grandma watching over us that night.

The Man With No Face

We have another shadow story from Sue Milddleton who sent this in from Spokane, Washington. Sue has titled it  The Man With No Face. I am not sure why but this story really sent a shiver or two down my spine. I think it might have something to do with a dream I had as a kid that I never quite got over to this day. I hope that you enjoy it.

I posted this story on reddit about a year ago. This happened back in 2017 and I was 11 years old. We were living in an old apartment building in Spokane. It was just me, my mom and little sister. I have always been obsessed with the paranormal, and would spend my time on youtube listening to ghost stories and things like that. It was during the halloween season, so we decided to go to Oktoberfest which is something we do every year. We bought this tablecloth that had a printing of a ouija board on it. I had always wanted one, but my mom was hesitant. Since this wasn’t a real ouija board she said okay. I still planned to try and play with it anyway to see if I could summon anything. But I never got around to it, so we just ended up hanging it in my room.

The Man With No Face

A few months later I decided to get up early and go into the living room to watch cartoons. It was still dark outside, and my mom and sister were asleep. All was well at first, then I saw it. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a black shadow figure dash from the kitchen into the hallway that led to our bedrooms. I instantly spun around and faced the direction where I saw the figure, of course there was nothing there. I shrugged it off and thought I could have just been seeing things in the dark. Fast forward again about a month later and that’s when things start to go down. My sister and I got home from school.  My mom starts to tell us that strange things were happening in our apartment, such as her thumb randomly going numb for no reason at all, the TV and radio messing up and becoming distorted, and our pet birds freaking out like something else was in the apartment. I wasn’t really scared at first, in fact I was excited. I always dreamed of having a paranormal encounter, and now it was finally happening. But soon I would learn that the paranormal is no laughing matter.

That evening my mom said that she and my sister were going to go and take our dog, Sophie, on a walk. I said I wanted to stay behind to see if anything paranormal would happen, and my mom was ok with it. After that I was left in our apartment alone, and was just sitting there again watching the show Adventure Time on our TV. Suddenly my walkie-talkie that was sitting right by me sprang to life and a man’s voice began talking from the other end. This scared the crap out of me, and I instantly ran outside to meet up with my mom and sister to tell them what happened. She said it could have just been on the same channel as someone else, plus we lived right next to a railroad and sometimes there would be workers up there. But that didn’t make any sense. First off you could clearly see the railroad outside of the living room window, and there was no one out there. And my walkie-talkie had been turned off, so I have no idea how it could have just randomly turned on like that. When we got back the TV was all distorted, and our pet birds were going crazy. That same evening my sister ran out of her room. She said that she saw a faceless man standing in the room, but when we looked in there nothing was there. She was too scared to go back and I started getting a bit spooked as well. My mom was able to convince her everything was fine, and she was finally able to go to sleep.

That night I woke up at 2:00 AM. I was groggy, but I remember looking at the ouija board table cloth and the yes and no were blinking. I was freaked out. Whenever me or my sister would wake up in the night we would go into my moms room and sleep there. My sister had woken up before me because she was already there, so I went and joined them. All three of us were awake, and tried to go back to sleep. But then things got started. We could hear what sounded like footsteps in our house. We also had a huge shelf of movies in the living room, and it sounded like someone was pulling them off the shelf. On top of all this we could hear pots and pans in the kitchen, and my walkie-talkie in the living room with that same man speaking through it. I don’t know what the voice was saying, but I could clearly hear someone talking. This went on for some time, maybe an hour or so.

The next morning everything mostly went back to normal, that was the last time we heard those noises, and nothing else strange really happened. What was weird was despite the noises, nothing seemed to be out of place. None of our movie cases were scattered or anything. But I knew it wasn’t simply a dream because my sister and mom remember it too. Soon after my mom threw the ouija board tablecloth in the trash, and refuses to buy anything else like that to this day.

The Whole Shadow

On the blog we have another of your stories. This time it comes from Freddy Foutaine who lives in North Carolina. We have been getting a large number of shadow stories of late. This bothers me a bit because these really creep me out. Not quite ghosts and yet never solid. What are these creatures? Do they mean harm to us? I am not sure I want to know the answer to those questions. Here is Freddy’s story titled The Whole Shadow.

It all started when I was around seventeen. We had just moved to North Carolina so that my parents could have a fresh start for all of us ( Family issues back then ). The house we had moved into was a beautiful older Victorian style house. It was quite run down, so my parents got an amazing deal on it. Maybe a little too good. It was close to public transport and across the road from a retirement home.

One evening we had a terrible thunderstorm. Heavy rains and hail hit the area, and some of the rooms leaked through. My parents thought just to be safe we will all sleep as a family in the lounge room. Everything started off great. We fell asleep easily but when 2:50ish rocked around I heard our dogs barking and whimpering. I got up to check on them. I went to the back door to see what was frightening them. I was not prepared for what I saw. There was a dark figure on the stairs leading up to the outside deck. Unfortunately back then I was way too brave for my own good. I slowly walked toward the stairs to get a better look at the figure. It took the shape of an elderly man. He just stood there staring at the dogs as I walked up a couple more steps. I tried to tell him that he is not supposed to be here but he didn’t respond. So I aggressively ran towards him yelling something, only to have him turn and face me. What I saw stopped me in my tracks and sent me running back down the stairs. Just below his chest was a gaping hole. It looked like a void of complete darkness, like someone had cut a perfect hole in him. Well, safe to say this scared the life out of me. I remember that he seemed to be trying to speak but no words came out. I reached the bottom of the stairs and turned back to look at him again. He was gone.

At this point I was so scared I ran back up inside to wake my parents. I told them what happened but they kept telling me it was just a dream. I know what I saw and I’ve walked past that old house many times as an adult.  I swear I still get the same chill up my spine and feel as if I’m being watched.
