Subject – Death Photos

Camera 1800'sThe art of death photos can be traced back to the invention of the Camera in 1816. People wanted to have a keepsake of their loved ones. As creepy as it sounds taking pictures after death made sense to people and some of those photos are worth big dollars today. On the podcast this week Jason and Ron take a look at this practice and shed some light on why it was done. Also on the show, we cover your questions about ghost hunting and past lives.

Is The Roosevelt Haunted?

The Roosevelt HotelOn the podcast this week we have a story sent in by Belinda Sparks. While I won’t tell her story here you will hear it this Thursday! What I will do is tell you about the location of the tale.

The historic Hollywood Roosevelt is a four-star hotel located in Hollywood that boasts more than just a four-star price. It opened its doors on May 15th, 1927, and is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Los Angeles. The place was grand and it welcomed the rich and famous. The idea was to have a place to cater to celebrities who were working on movies in the area. Notable guests included Charlie Chaplin, Shirley Temple, and Marilyn Monroe. In fact, the hotel was the site of the very first Academy Awards.

The Hotel Roosevelt is 12-stories high, with 300 guest rooms and 63 suites. As with anything of age the place is haunted by a multitude of ghosts, two of which are known celebrities. Montgomery Clift haunts Room 928 where he stayed while filming From Here to Eternity. Most complaints are about him are moving around the room and messing with luggage. Other hotel guests have seen him in the hallway rehearsing his lines or playing his trumpet from the movie. Perhaps the most famous haunting of the Roosevelt is Marilyn Monroe. She is said to haunt the full-length mirror that was once in her suite.

If you need a real fright attempt to stay in room 213. It is reported to be the most haunted in the entire hotel. Many who attempt to stay there check out in the middle of the night because of the obvious ghost activities in the room. People have reported seeing a headless apparition coming towards them, while others complained of the television and sink turning on and off without any help.

You would think with all these strange goings-on The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel would be haunted out of business. That is not the case.  Today there is a waiting list of years just to stay in Marilyn’s suite alone. They must be doing something right, as people and ghosts just can’t seem to stay away.

Please join us on Thursday to hear the amazing story of Belinda’s own experience while staying just one night in the famous hotel.

Happy Thanksgiving – 2019

Happy Thanksgiving!Hello!

First, let me say Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family from Ron’s Amazing Stories. Did you know that President Thomas Jefferson thought making Thanksgiving a National Holiday was “a ridiculous proposition.” It’s True! Meanwhile, Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird and it was even rumored that he nicknamed the turkey “Tom” to spite Thomas.

On the podcast this week I am taking a break from doing a full show. But not to worry it is going to be a good one! We have a classic science fiction story written by Isaac Asimov called Nightfall. It is one of my favorites by him and I think you are going to love it. Also, I found a real Thanksgiving story from the adventure series Challenge of the Yukon staring that amazing husky King!

Happy Thanksgiving!

-Ron

How To Find Sound Fx?

I received this email from Zachary Byrd who writes to us from the great state of Illinois.

I am a long-time listener to the program and just wanted to write to thank you for being here for me. Your show is always fun, always entertaining and …well, always there.  If I had to change anything it would be to have more stories. My question is about sound effects. I am dabbling in sound editing and want to make my own short stories. But I can’t find any sound effects that aren’t copyrighted or require purchase. Can you help me with this?  – Zach

Zach, I have been there and done that. You are correct that there are a lot of folks out there who supply effects, but you don’t have to pay for them. There are many available on youtube, but the problem is that you have to convert those from video to audio for use. Not difficult, but it is time-consuming. My go-to place for sound effects is either to create them myself or head to FreeSound.org. FreeSound.org

For example A few weeks ago it did a skit with Jim Harold. I needed the ambient sound of being picked up by a car and driving. I was not able to find exactly what I was looking for so I created my own. What I did was record it using an external mic, my iPad, and a trip in my Subaru. It worked out pretty good too.

Freesound.org is a group of folks that provides a collaborative database of audio snippets, samples, recordings, bleeps …whatever and releases them under Creative Commons licenses that allow their reuse. You only have to give the creator credit if you plan to use it for commercial use.

I hope that helps you, Zach.
