RAS Podcast Contest

For the past few weeks we have been talking about Jason Dowd’s challenge to RAS listeners everywhere. On the Horror Express #19 we talked about David Larson’s Marionette. Jason conducted a full investigation of the little guy, had some interesting results at first, but then forgot all about him. However, quite recently the doll came up missing and Jason wants us to guess as to what may have happened to it.

The Paranormal With Jason

Next week we will be piloting a new segment called The Paranormal with Jason. On this show Jason and I will read your submissions and pick the most creative to receive a gift from Gladdy’s Goodies for your dog.  At stake is 4 ounces of chicken treats and 2oz doggie biscuits.

So far we have four submissions from you guys and you have until Friday, July 3rd to get your guesses in. So please send your ideas to ronsmazingstories@gmail.com or simply use the contact tab on the main webpage. All stories are welcome no matter how strange. My thanks to Jason and yo Gladdy’s Goodies for this contest.

Listener Request From Josh

Rons Picture

I received this email from Josh Gilbert who writes to us from Clarksville, Tennessee.

Hello Ron, I love the podcast and never miss a show. I do know that you have a lot of links on your main page. Can you take a moment and explain the ones that are important and what they do? Also, what is the difference between an HTTPS address and HTTP? – Josh

Very happy to do this. I thought this would be better as a blog than on the show so that you can follow the links to see what they are for yourself. First, let me say that at the bottom of every blog post and the show notes are most of the important links. Also, there really are only two locations for the show. The main website and then the blog page. Most of the links are shared between the two. The one exception is the archive page which is hosted by archive.org.

Here are the important ones:

http://ronsamazingstories.com – The podcast is hosted by Liberated Syndication (Libsyn). They do all of the work of distributing the show. From here it goes to places like iHeartRadio, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher Radio, Spotify and many other locations including YouTube. There is a simple blog page, but that is most of the show’s material is at the second site.

https://ronsamazingstories.blog – This is the site where all of your comments, stories and informational material originates. When you send me a comment or submit a story you are taken to this location. Also, each week I repost the show notes here (Libsyn automagically does that for me too – BTW). This is the true location of Ron’s Amazing Stories. Also, it is the only place where you can subscribe by using your email address.

https://archive.org/details/archived-RAS-episodes – This address simply is the archive of the first 100 shows. I have donated these episodes to the public domain.

As for the difference between HTTP and HTTPS?  HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol. It is the underlying procedures used by the World Wide Web. It defines how messages are formatted, and what actions your browser should take in response to various commands. The “S” on the end simply means that the site is secured. You will note that the Libsyn site is not secured. That is because it would cost me cash to secure it. Since there is nothing at the site that requires your input securing it is redundant and is enforced at the blog site.

Well Josh. I hope this answers your question.

-Ron

RAS #441 – Second Sight

On Ron’s Amazing Stories we have three tales sent in by you that follow the theme of Angel Encounters. One of these is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. I couldn’t stop with the angels so I created a brand new Johnny Is It True segment that tests your knowledge of the angel phenomenon. Our featured story comes from the pen of Doctor X from 1963 called Second Sight. This one has a twist that you won’t see coming. We end the show with some viral news from the fourteenth century.

Featured Story – Second Sight

Our feature story comes from the book titled The Counterfeit Man – More Science Fiction Stories by Alan E. Nourse in 1963. It was brought to my attention by listener Jodi Krangle. Jodi not only told me about this story, but also reads it for us, and she does an incredible job I might add. The story is about a girl struggling with her psychic gift and how she uses it.

Spotlight – Alan E. Nourse

Alan E. Nourse

Every once in a while I like to feature authors from the past that helped change the world. Alan Edward Nourse is one of these. He was a prolific writer during the 50’s and 60’s. He mostly wrote for the pulp magazines under the pen name Doctor X. Nourse was more than just a writer; his primary occupation was a physician. He wrote both juvenile and adult science fiction, as well as nonfiction works about medicine and science. His stories focused on medicine or psionics.

In science fiction of the 1950s and ’60s, psionics was a proposed discipline that applied principles of engineering to the study of paranormal or psychic phenomena, such as telepathy and psychokinesis. The term is a blending of psi and the -onics from electronics.

Nourse was born August 11, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended high school in Long Island, New York. He served in the U.S. Navy after World War II. He earned a BS science degree in 1951 from Rutgers University. He married Ann Morton on June 11, 1952, in Linden, New Jersey. He received a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree in 1955 from the University of Pennsylvania. He began his practice in North Bend, Washington, and during that time pursued his writing career. He had helped pay for his medical education by writing science fiction for magazines. After retiring from medicine, he continued writing. His regular column in Good Housekeeping magazine earned him the nickname “The Family Doctor”

He died on July 19, 1992, in Thorp, Washington at the age of 64.

This Week’s Podcast: On the show this week we have angels themed listener’s stories and a classic science fiction story that has a twist that you will never see coming. That will make even more sense if you tune in this week. You can listen to this podcast on Thursday at Ron’s Amazing Stories, download it from Apple Podcasts, stream it on Stitcher Radio or on the mobile version of Spotify. Do you prefer the radio? We are heard every Thursday at 10:00 pm and Sunday Night at 11:00 PM (EST) on AMFM247.COM. Check your local listing or find the station closest to you at this link
